Speaker cable...

Post by phongn »

It's almost amusing how much people try to rip you off for audio/video cable.

Case in point, I'm building a nice little stereo system. The preamp and amp are from eBay, the speakers and an external online. Reasonable prices, I think.

So I wander over to Best Buy and look at their speaker cable. Monster XP is something like $80 for a 75ft roll of 10-gauge cable. I thought that a bit steep and thus wandered over to Home Depot. They had 12-gauge cable on sale for $0.17/ft (normally $0.37/ft.) I grabbed about fifty feet for much less than some 'brand name' cable.

I also looked at RCA interconnects. As usual, the Best Buy stuff started at $15 for a 3-ft. pair. Radio Shack? Their good stuff is $9/pair.

Ahh, the crazy world of home audio...

That's not too bad yet, there's some cables out there that cost damn near $1000/ft, and no, that's not a typo. Now if you needed to cable together a home theater system you'll probably need at least 30' worth of cable, and at a 1000 bucks/ft you'll be able to buy yourself a BMW.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P

For real. It'd be cheaper just to make your own cables. This is especially true for networking cabling as well.
