yay! electricity is phun!

Post by Col. Crackpot »

Well, i managed to give myself a damn good jolt of electricity this weekend. I was installing a new light in my hallway and instead of pulling the main circuit breaker i just switched off the light and made a mental note to be careful. PoW! Fortuntately it was only a 110 volt circuit and it was a ceiling mount so i got a quick zap and fell down. Needless to say i quickly pulled the main before i finished and kept it off until i had installed ALL of the new lights. Yes, i'm a dumbass.

You have not experienced fun until you've shorted out a large, fully charged high voltage capacitor. But I do have to admit that 110V AC gives you a pretty nice buzz. And remember, beer and electricity don't mix. :D

Heh, reminds me of my screwed PC powersupply that put the whole case under electricity, which suddenly zapped me when I touched it to see why the PC had shut down...

My Civic shocks me all the time. I think its the cloth seats.

Hehe, I learned to shut off the main breaker for the whole house when working on electrical stuff. Why? Because, panels are often mislabled.

Ouch, same thing happened to me a few weeks ago.

Stupid electricity.

Glad you're ok though.

I am glad you are ok. Lucky for you it was only 110 volts not 220 volts as found in my country.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Ouch. although i was hit with 240 volt 3-phase once at work because of faulty, exposed wiring. I don't work there anymore. Where i work now we have voltages up to 480 Volts, but it is a much safer work environment.

It's not the voltage you have to watch out for, its the amps and ohms, or as my friend likes to annoy physics teachers, omps and ahms. I wonder how much voltage you dropped off the circuit.

I bet that was a shocking experience.

Be glad it was 110v, anything higher hurts like a bitch and tends to light stuff on fire, other than just burning you really damn good.

Bah, that's nothing. I once had the capacitor in an old Apple monitor discharge into my arm. :P

I nearly got zapped four fucking times when I was fixing the Hako floor cleaner at work. Bastard un-covered wires. The spanner I was using looked like it had been used be Ripley to beat the shit out of an Alien. (it was melted)

sounds harsh. The closest I can come to it when in gym class a few ago(when we cleaned out the lockers) I unplugged my laptop and while I was unplugging it I got a shock I simply got jolted and immedinatly made a move to grab onto the insulated part of the powercord.

In my youth, I blew out a old TV's power supply by "creatively" rewiring the TV's innards. It fired a 4 ft lighting bolt into the ceiling (due to grounded water pipes I think). The next day I hooked it up to a 12 V car battery charger to see if still worked. Nothing seemed to be happening, when I realized that direct current wasn't going to do anything to a transformer.

So, I scraped one of the wires along the charger's electrode to create some AC. Seeing sparks, I leaned in closer and tried again, not realizing that I was no longer holding onto the insulated part of the charger's electrode.

My arms contracted with enough force to throw me 3 ft backwards right into a coathook (dead centre on my spine). No serious harm, done, but both my arms and back hurt like a MF.
