More than I ever thought I would at my age. But I also had to pay back a pretty big student loan for my last year of university so I'm only just starting to save up now.

Depends on how you look at it. While I make $12.00 an hour (stellar starting pay around here) I only work two and a half to three hours a day. I still live with my parents, and I recently recieved a free car (my grandmother's just too old to drive). So my expenses aren't much, I pay for gas, car insurance and... My FFXI subscription. Beyond that, I horde for college later on and have a decent stash already. I don't mind the short hours, because free time is my most vital commodity. I DO mind having to drive an hour to work, and putting up with my family's dysfunctional bullshit.

That just blows. You must not have anytime to yourself or for fun.
Every once in a while I do, but let me tell you, working Monday through Sunday month after month without days off REALLY FUCKING SUCKS. Especially when I have next to nothing to show for it.

And you're right, Dalton; I too think I might dislike Australia.... :P

I work as a painter a few hundred kilometres up the coast. To work there I must stay with my father, it's a $20/4 hour train trip there.

Then I must get up at 5:30 so we can be there at 7am. I then work until 5pm. I make $7 an hour.

Even then I can only work 2-3 days a week at best.

I could be doing better.

I feel for you. Does teaching just pay really low where you are at? Being that busy would make it hard to date too.

It's a combination of poor salary, student loans, and assisting my family with medical bills and such. And yes, it leaves precious little time to date, see friends, stay sane, etc. *lopsided smile*

Making less money than you think you deserve is irritating. What drives you absolutely nuts, however, is seeing some jackass who doesn't deserve it raking in the money because of some dumb-luck decision years ago. Like the woman who got hired as a secretary at Home Depot when they were just getting started, became the president's personal secretary, and ended up making millions because of profit-sharing and stock optoins. Mind you, she probably sucked the guy's dick, but that's still some pretty fucking good pay.

She's not the only one; there are all kinds of idiots out there who just stumbled into money through pure luck (leaving aside the ones who inherited money or a network of invaluable business connections from their parents). And if they understood that it was dumb-luck, it wouldn't be so bad, but this particular type of jack-ass usually thinks that it was his superior business acumen that led to his success, so they walk around rubbing other peoples' noses in it while holding their own noses up in the air.

I don't begrudge anyone who made good money from options or an ESPP if they worked at the company for 20 years and just got lucky.

However, I fucking hate the high paid jack-asses who rake in the dough and are the last to be laid of cause they are friends of the CEO. That shit happens far too much in tech. I'm not shitting you here, at my last company one of the well paid engineers who was last to go, could'nt figure out which port on the back of a PC was the video card. This was in front of a customer too!

That's one of the benefits of working with startups. You don't have near the job security or benefits of a large company, but on the 1/20 chance that you go public and the company becomes a big success, you get stock options potentially worth millions for only a few years work.

During the dot-com bubble, I was working as a fucking intern and I got lucky at a startup that actually did go public and for a brief period I was actually a millionare. Fifteen fucking years old and I was a millionare for a year's worth of part-time work because of simple dumb luck. Too bad for me the stock soon plummeted before I could sell and I didn't even get enought to pay my college tuition for a year. :x

Most of the time, Martin and I have enough to survive paycheck to paycheck... but only because he's getting parental subsidaries.

This past month, there were bounced checks & fees, a traffic ticket, and then the entire content of the fridge going bad in the power outtage.

In short, even after I was paid the 31st, I had $9 to last me until the 15th of this month... and we *still* haven't replaced all the food that went bad.
