Carve out a huge chunk of rock. Can't you use the asteriod calculator thing for this?

Wipe out thousands of square kilometers and radically alter the climate, at least for a while.

You talking about the one on sd.net? That offers an input value of diameter. Or are you supposed to play around with that until a figure of 200GT shows up in one of the calculated values?

Doing a quick and dirty calc. using that calculator I got 58480m. diameter gets you a 200 gigaton fragmentation energy. I don't know if that is how you use it though.

a) Make a big hole in the ground.

b) Mess up local weather patterns. (Maybe spawn a hurricane?)

c) Cause humanity to ph34r the Star Destroyer.

d) Score major coolness points at the nightclubs (Hey babe, I've got a Star Destroyer, want to do naughty things to each other in my room for several hours?)

e) Convince the people owing you money to pay up (Uh... okay, Shinova, here's the money... Plus interest. Please don't kill me.)

f) Start the fundies off about how this is " a sign of the apocalypse" before they get obliterated by a second blast

g) Make most scientists around the woprld kick themselves for not taking SW seriously, except for Wong and Saxton, who will fold their arms, grin smugly and say "I told you so"

Look on the "Planet Killers" portion of the "Essays" page. First one is for a large asteroid. While not exactly equivalent to a turbolaser, a 10^5 MT asteroid should give you a pretty good approximation of what will happen.

Not that much Astrologically speaking.

Big earthquake (9.1). although, not the biggest recorded.
Big crater (18 km), although not the biggest found. Gosses Bluff, Australia has a bigger one.

The Earth has big hit by thousands of asteroids with bigger impacts.

So while the locals aren't going to like it, globally there's little to concern yourself with.

It would need to be about 40 times more powerful before you need to pack you bags and find a new planet.

No, he mans astrologiaclly. After all, a 200 GT blast could make your horiscope even more inaccurate than it already is. :P

Not really. if your horoscope said "Today is a bad day for you. Basically you're fucked." And a 200 GT hit blew up your city, that would be a pretty accurate prediction, no?

But your horiscope would more likely be, 'Today is a good day for business. Look out for the beginnings of a new romantic relationship with a Virgo, or possibly a Tarus. Travel is in your future!'

And the Astrology freaks would probably point to that last part as proof astrology works.

Yeah. They're always vague about such things. Although the last part is somewhat correct. YOu're on a one way trip.

To HELL.

EDIT: Not directed at anyone.

Probably.

A 200 GT blast, or as Lord Edam called it in his debate with Mike, a Base Delta Zero, is explained in his part. Of course, his deals with several smaller blasts spread throught the surface of a planet, instead of one concentrated blast.

Or, to be simple, use that famous quote from Loser099: "That much power would be able to destroy a planet in a single shot"

You do realize that Loser099 is completely wrong, right? It's not clear from your post.

The planetary defense whitepaper at FAS has a set of graphs that show what kind of effects could be expected from very large explosions.

http://www.fas.org/spp/military/docops/ ... /app-r.htm

Basically a 200GT HTL would be close to a one-shot civilization killer but it wouldn't significantly restructure--let alone fragment--the victim planet.
