It's pretty interesting, though I feel like the newbie of all newbies with what I don't know. I just got through some of the basics like partioning.

If you find one, you're probably going to have to pay for it. Most admins don't like the idea of leaving shell accounts open to the Internet...

Download and install Linux on your machine. The best way to learn about this sort of thing is to do it on an environment where you have root access, so you can learn about the nuts and bolts of how things work.

Granted you'll still want to find a spare box to install Linux on. On university accounts, you're not going to have a lot of privileges. Some stuff won't work because it requires power user or root access.

Not with root privileges though, and he'll need that if he wants to learn how things work.

You could "acquire" a copy of VMWare.
