A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

With my bum knee, it's one of the steps I can actually do. Most Latin dances are too fast (which causes my knee to buckle), and I don't care for pseudosex on the dance floor.

I did go, and enjoyed it. Enjoyed the (very unofficial) after party even more though.
Went stag, but didn't have a girlfriend. Had a female classmate sign in one of my good friends who I had barely seen for the previous three years (his dad got a job overseas). Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen him since the days following the prom. *cringes* Well that sucks, now doesnt' it?

Strictly speaking, I didn't stay home - my boyfriend and I went to a concert instead and yes, I think we definitely had a better time that we would have had we gone to the prom.

I went to a high school called John Paul College south of Brisbane. They were total assholes when it came to formal time. Let me explain:
- You HAD to go to the formal. If you weren't dying or had approval from the headmaster about a year in advance, you absolutely had to go. One of my friends was told that if he didn't attend, he wouldn't be graduating.
- No such thing as going stag; you either got yourself a date, or were put with one. When they ran out of grade 12's to fill the date quota, they got year 11's.
- No alcohol, at all, even if you were over eighteen.
- The female dresses were carefully policed so they didn't offend the 18th century puritans who ran the event. They were basically looked over with a microscope to examine for even the slightest bit of slink.
- No afterparties. See, JPC has this policy that if you go to a party, and there's alcohol or drugs, you have to leave. If you don't, you get expelled. In addition, they don't allow afterparties after any school related events. A parent had to pick you up from the door of the formal venue, and they set it up so nearly everyone had a pre-8am start the next morning.
So, yeah, I went to my formal. I actually had a good time, too; there was the set slow dancing that everyone had to do, but my partner and I missed all the practices (she had English Extension classes then and I had Music Extension), so we basically just got up and made total fools of ourselves. Food was alright, too, and the DJ was an ex student.
I had a good time; it's just too bad about the way ve vere forced to go by ze administration. *mimes a goosestep*

How can they even enforce that?

ZOMG Meeper is a Jeeper? JPC certainly has a reputation for being a bunch of fuckasses.
Sure I went to mine. I had the coolest jacket, the most understated, memorable entrance, and several women. It was kinda lame (I mean, you can't believe the music they played etc) but it was cool as far as last hurrahs go.
The Year 11 formal leaver's do thing I and my friends didn't go to, we hung out at my mate Nick's house, skated for a bit , one of the most pleasant summer days/evenings ever. Nice warm sun, gorgeous sunset, electric feeling as ngiht set in and an era ended.
One of the coolest nights of my life, in all honesty.
In 6th form, year 13, we had a formal leaver's do, I went and it sucked ass for the most part. I wore a suit and looked badass, and got a surprising amount of cheering at the end of the night when my name got read out for some reason. All in all it was fucking worthless, the food was meagre, I saw everyone there regularly anyway. Everyone looked pretty and all, but it was utterly vacuous.

With great difficulty, I presume. The only time I've ever heard about an afterparty happening was after a formal a few years back; some idiot blabbed to a teacher and about seventy pupils got suspended, and about five expelled. I'm sure I can find the Courier Mail article later on today when I get home.
//EDIT
The party rule is mainly enforced by the cops stopping a party and getting everyone's names; JPC gets lists of everyone and checks them off against class lists. Of course, again, sometimes idiots just talk.
Stark wrote:ZOMG Meeper is a Jeeper? JPC certainly has a reputation for being a bunch of fuckasses.
The funny thing is that half the stupid rules they have aren't enforced, so really, half the reputation isn't deserved. Unless you were talking about the students. In which case, I'll have to take up arms and defend my alma mat- oh, who am I kidding. Nearly everyone who goes to that school is a pompous posturing prick with a silver spoon shoved so far up their ass that they get gold fillings for contrast. I went for the laptops. And the fact that among the employers in Brisbane, you get a bit of respect for going there; what with the greetings and the being well groomed young gentlemen and such.
I used to bus to a job past JPC every morning, so I know all about the hilariously lowbrow nature of the students of that fine, expensive educational institution.

Amazing. And the schools have a legal right to dictate student behaviour outside of school property?

My old school did that all the time. Teachers busted kids for doing things that were legal but against school rules, after school, when they were out of uniform.
Lord Zentei wrote:Amazing. And the schools have a legal right to dictate student behaviour outside of school property?
From what I understand, as those rules are conditions of enrolment, they have a legally defensible position that they can withdraw enrolment at any time. If it were a public school, then no, but this is a different case.
Cancelled due to lack of interest. The student body didn't like the way the admin was playing puppeteer with the prom committe, so we told them to shove it up their asses and did our own things.

I really didn't want to be there in the first place, and it was hot, crowded, and loud there. It was just about the polar opposite of what I define as fun.
I hope the girl ditched your ass as soon as you got there.
Luckily, she did have the good sense to go do something else after about the first half hour. At least her night didn't suck.
Durandal wrote:Just how retarded are you? Do you honestly never want to have sex, ever?
It really doesn't make that much difference to me. It wasn't going to happen that night anyways.
I don't get it. Why did you go if you knew you wouldn't enjoy it?
And not to sound like a vulture, but dude, bringing a toy lightsabre to prom? What were you thinking?

But you know, that was back then, the internet isn't for nerds anymore.
Atleast it made me laugh.
Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who did not.
I went and even without a date, I was bored out of my mind. The only reason I didn't jump ship was that because I was on a ship; it was a 5 hour cruise on the San Francisco Bay. I was in no mood for an evening swim and besides, the view kept me occupied.
For the people who went, what was your theme and where did it take place?
No theme. It took place in a (pretty nice) restaurant/bar that was rented for the evening; it came with a sound system, so all they had to do was remove the tables and chairs for an instant dancefloor.
I don't really remember the decorations, but it wasn't anything special, just a few drapes and flowers.
