This might help people with the other films that were nominated in a specific year, although sometimes deserving films are completely left out.

Well, I think The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring should have won over a Boring Mind. It was easily the better movie, but it's fantasy so of course they can't give it the Oscar it deserves.

I have been disallusioned with the Oscars ever since Shakespear in Love, and Gwenyth Paltrow, beat out Elizabeth and Cate Blanchett for best movie and best actress

I think The Godfather, A beautiful mind, and Schindler's List are the best movies ever. I enjoyed titanic but I don't quite understand why people loved it so much. I mean i know several people who went to see it 5 times in the theaters for $10 each time. I mean what a waste of money. And also titanic was slightly anti climatic because the ending is already known and the "passionate" love scene didn't develop the characters at all but portray them as sexually driven people. It made them look bad, and just when i was liking them.

There is movies I do not like but I understand their choices. Its for example Annie Hall in 1977, a really good Woody Allen movie, but my favorites are either Star Wars or Close Encounters.
But there is some years, Titanic and Gladiator are bad movies. Just it.

here the different options:

in 1976 Network, Really a very good movie, great plot lost to that Stallone normal movie.
1978 there is Midnight Express, a great movie.
1979 is the year of Apocalypse Now. Cmom, this is a great great movie.
1980, Ordinary People is not bad, but Raging Bull is kind of unique.
1981 Raiders of Lost ark is more movie than Chariots of Fire. So is Reds and Atlantic City.
1982 Gandhi is good but ET is one step ahead and Tootsie is one of best comedies of USA ever. Not to say it is the year of Blade Runner (should have won)
1983 Here is a bad year...Return of Jedi is better than all those...
1985 Honor's Prizzi is great
1986 Blue Velvet is much better than all those
1987 Untouchables
1988 Who Framed Roger Rabitt
1990 The Grifters
1991 Beauty and the Best (yes, Silence of the Lambs is very good also)
1997 LA Confidential
1999 The Insider
2000 Crouching Tiger ,hidden Dragon
2001 Memmento (even with LoTR there)
Muffin is food. Food is good. I am a Muffin. I am good.

I'm good with Gladiator winning the 2001 Best Picture award. At least it didn't go to "Erin Brokovich".

Titanic only got the award becaue everylone liked it for some reason. I my opinion, it was an overrated soppy romance flick, and the only part I actually ejoyed was when the ship was sinking.

[quote="Rathark"]... which one of these films would have kept the Oscar for best picture? What films were more deserving than the ones that actually got it? Would there be more of the latter than the former?

1972: The Godfather

Absolutely deserved its Oscar.

1973: The Sting

Good movie but not Oscar material.

1974: The Godfather Part II

Absolutely deserved its Oscar.

1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Nicholson for Best Actor, yes, but I'm not sure about the entire movie. What about Jaws?

1976: Rocky

[/B] Best Picture, no. Best Original Screenplay or Best Actor.[/B]

1977: Annie Hall

Woody Allen for Best Director. And Diane Keaton deserved the Best Actress trophy.

1978: The Deer Hunter

Haven't seen this movie. Outstanding acting all around, so I figure it deserves Best Picture as well.

1979: Kraver vs Kramer

No. Good movie but not Best Picture material. What about Alien? Sigourney Weaver deserved a Best Actress nod.

1980: Ordinary People

No. What about SW: Empire Strikes Back? Raging Bull?

1981: Chariots of Fire

Truly lame choice. This is what upsets people about the Oscars. This is a film that practically nobody saw.

1982: Ghandi

Absolutely deserved, including Ben Kingsley for Best Actor.

1983: Terms of Endearment

Oh, please. No. Good, sappy, chick flick. Not Best Picture material.

1984: Amadeus

F. Murray Abraham won for Best Actor but this film wasn't good enough to merit Best Picture. What about The Killing Fields?

1985: Out of Africa

Iffy. Memoirs always translate well to dramatic films so it's a given that this would be nominated. And Meryl Streep probably earned another Oscar for her mantel.

1986: Platoon

Absolutely deserved its Oscar. However, Sigourney Weaver should have won Best Actress for her turn as Ripley in Aliens.

1987: The Last Emporer

Long-winded film but beautifully photographed by Bernardo Bertolucci. An Academy favorite, historical drama. I'd say yes.

1988: Rain Man

Yes. Dustin Hoffman was incredible. Tom Cruise gave good support.

1989: Driving Miss Daisy

No, as much as I liked the film. Chick flick. Dan Aykroyd's dramatic turn as Boolie was overlooked.

1990: Dances With Wolves

Yes. Beautifully filmed and acted, Kevin Costner deserved every Oscar he got for this film.

1991: The Silence of the Lambs

Absolutely deserved its Oscar.

1992: Unforgiven

Absolutely deserved its Oscar. Favorite lines: "You shot an unarmed man! Clint Eastwood replies, "He should've armed himself."

1993: Schindler's List

Yes on all counts. Spielberg reminds us he's not just a popcorn movie director.

1994: Forrest Gump

No. Sappy sentimentality does not equal Best Picture. Robin Wright Penn was great in the movie, though, as was Tom Hanks.

1995: Braveheart

Yes on all counts.

1996: The English Patient

Good drama. Not Best Picture material though. Lauren Bacall should have won Best Supporting Actress and not Juliette Binoche.

1997: Titanic

No. LA Confidential was the superior film in every way.

1998: Shakespeare In Love

No. Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan was superior.

1999: American Beauty

Another lame drama. Kevin Spacey is a terrific actor but this film wasn't the best. Spike Jonze's odd and wonderful Being John Malcovich should have been a contender.

2000: Gladiator

Yes. Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott did justice to gladiator films.

2001: A Beautiful Mind

No. LotR was the superior film.
