Truck Rental - Credit Card

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

My mom needs to rent a truck to drive from CA to AZ. She has no credit and will probably ask me to use my credit card for the rental. Does anyone know what kind of liability this opens me to? I would assume that if she turns in the truck late I get charged, but what I am worried about is what if the truck gets trashed or stolen?

I don't know about the stolen part but the last time I rented a truck I had to fill out a form documenting all the damage and marks already on the vehicle because they would charge me for any new ones. They also will charge you for not returning the truck with a full tank of fuel.

Since it's on your credit card your the one who's stuck for everything unless you get some sort of legal contract with your mom saying otherwise. Still, as far as the rental company is concerned they are going to bill everything through your credit card. It's also likely that you'll end up being the primary person on the rental agreement since I doubt they'd put your mom first if she didn't have any credit.

Yeah that's what I thought. Last time she did this, I followed her but it was just a short drive of 10 miles. Im not worried about being charged for a tank of gas, but I am really worried about her crashing or losing the truck.
She is not a responsible person and thats why I worry, if this was my dad I would not blink an eye.

I think they will likely offer you extra insurance which my own auto insurance guy told me wasn't needed because my own policy covered me when I rented a vehicle. Since you aren't going with your mom you might want to check on getting the additional insurance. I'm not sure what it covers though.
