Ironically, today's Doonesbury had Marijuana and Cigarette talking to each other. Cigarette mentions that's he's killed 400K people in the past year; Marijuana dejectedly states that he's only caused 750K arrests, and zero deaths.

I once had this conversation with a girl on the topic of the criminalization of marijuana...

"So why should it be illegal? Tell me exactly what you think."

"Well, it's bad for you." (she elaborated on it more, but that's what it boiled down to)

"So by your logic, I should go to jail for smoking marijuana because it's bad for me."

"Yes."

"So you're going to protect me from myself by sending me to jail."

"Yes."

"I haven't done anything to anyone else, mind you. All I've done is smoked a joint on my own time, in my own house. I didn't go out driving afterwards, I didn't share it with any kids. I didn't have to go to work the next day. But I need to go to jail for smoking it anyway."

"Yes."

"Because it's bad for me."

"Yes."

"So tell me, is jail good for me?"

"Um..."

"Is it? Will going to jail improve my carreer prospects, my romantic life (no soap-dropping jokes, please), my health and well being?"

"No."

"So why, if jail is bad for me, do I need to go there if I smoke marijuana, which is also bad for me? Especially since I could probably get weed in there, too, if not something stronger."

"Um...marijauna is bad for you."

This would have been amusing except 1) she was dead serious, and 2) this went on, over and over, for nearly an hour before I realized this.

Because they make you high. No true American should ever, ever be high.

I believe people have feelings like that toward marijuana simply because it's illegal, making it seem worse.

Some people who support the criminalization of marijuana say if it was legalized, the stoned drivers would pose a threat to the other drivers. Does anyone think that makes sense?

To anyone that has been drunk at least once in their life, and to anyone who has been stoned at least once in their life, no that wouldn't make much make sense. People saying being stoned is like being drunk have NO idea what they're talking about. A drunk cannot walk, talk, or pass themselves off as being anything but drunk. A stoned person could be driving you around and you would never know. Stoned people generally aren't all that hip to getting behind the wheel in the first place.

Nice slippery slope. There is a huge difference between fun activities and addiction. Very few people spend themselves into poverty and theft in order to frequent bars or sports clubs. There are some people who have addictive personalities, but most people can easily choose to not to go out if they cannot afford it. Marijuana, like other drugs, is addictive, and it can cause cravings that cannot be easily controlled.

Now, I do not think it is on the same level as crack. I think it probably should be removed fro the schedule one list and made available for medical research and practice. However, I remember enough of my father's friends and dealers to know that it is not as harmless as some of you might think. There probably are some people who can use pot responsibly, just as there are some people who can quite tobacco cold turkey, and functioning alcoholics. But that does not make it harmless or non-addictive.

As for the laws, they make no sense. Tobacco should be illegal. Simple possession of marijuana probably should not be illegal, but it should be a controlled substance, like any prescription drug.

Marijunana likes to ignore reaility doesnt he? I guess all the car and train wrecks that have been caused by one party smoking pot or the cancer deaths don't count?

1st: No, unless they're proven via autopsies or whatever. The cigarette companies have been getting off that way for a long time now: it ain't easy to prove what causes cancer in the first place.

2nd: Dude. "Train wrecks that have been caused by one party smoking pot"? Tell me you aren't serious.

Anyway: My feeling is that marijuana is no more dangerous than many widley available legal mind altering agents; sure it's more carcinogenic than cigarettes, but one typically doesn't smoke a dozen joints in a day.
Sure it can fuck your life up, but so can a million and one other things. Uncle Sam (appologies to non-American posters) has no business telling us what we do or don't have a right to do; the reasons Yosimite Bear quoted for marijuana's criminalization are the gospel truth.

And that's really all I can say on the matter at the moment.

Like food in that regard. We have an obesity health crisis in the U.S. Suicide by eating yourself to death is sickening, especially considering how many people starve to death every fucking day.

There was a fatal train wreck 15-16 years ago. The engineer said he was stoned on the job and caused it. It's still the single most damning evidence drug war advocates quote for the harshness of marijuana laws.

and the slippery slope goes back to you. very few people spend themselves into poverty and theft in order to buy pot. bars, i´m not so sure about.
another problem that would be solved, by the way. legalizing it could make a box of 20 joints as cheap as a box of 20 cigarettes or even cheaper.

mmmh... vending machines selling pot 24/7, for 3 Euro, yay!

if pot is addictive it might be because of some substanced added. acteyl or some crap like that for example.
this problem would be solved by legalizing it and controlling it.

Complex cause fallacy, along with an unrepresentative sample fallacy. Show why this should be general rule for marijuana use, rather than the exception. Furthermore, what were the conditions surrounding the wreck? What did he hit? Did some car try to beat the train? I've smoked weed tons of times, and all I've ever done was have a good time, watch The Simpsons and get a really damn good night's sleep.

By the way, would the accident not have happened if the conductor was, say, drunk? Probably not. Should we, therefore, make alcohol illegal? No, of course not. The sensible thing to do would be to prohibit the consumption of alcohol during work hours. Surprisingly, prohibiting the use of marijuana during work hours would also be the sensible thing to do. There is no reason to illegalize it entirely.
