Purge: Anarchy Trailer
Basically, the premise is that crime becomes legal through the U.S. for one hour. I have a few observations about the premise.
- while it is clear that people are immune from arrest and prosecution for what they do during the Purge, it is not all clear that there are immune from civil liability. As such,a corporation that decides to just dump all of its toxic waste into the nearest river during the Purge could be sued by the EPA. People with significant assets would likewise refrain from participating absent measures to conceal their identities from whoever would sue them. (The trailer shows rich people bidding on victims in what appears to be a concealed location, indicating that they understand the threat of a wrongful death lawsuit if their participation was known.)
- Sexual assaults would be much more common, even more common than murders. While going out to rape strangers would be dangerous, if for no other reason than bands of murderers roaming about, it would happen between friends and acquaintances much more often, especially if rape was an ulterior motive for offering protection or shelter from the Purge. In fact, some children would be on the receiving end of an all-night orgy of sexual abuse, as their abusers would be immune from prosecution.
- Similarly, police officers could legally steal all the weapons in the armory and sell it to arms dealers. However, making sure that they are set for life after selling those weapons (as they would unlikely be able to find another job afterward) would likely be the least of their problems, as they have to make sure the arms dealers just do not shoot them in the back, keeping the weapons and the cash.

Wow. They made a sequel. Even on a budget of 3 million, the first one looks like it bombed.

Isn't there an old Star Trek (Original Series) episode with a premise like this?

Dear god ANOTHER one? Yrch… I thought at first this was a review of the original.
Going to just say what I said the first time around about the concept of this "Movie"
Say you are a movie writter, you are sitting around the table and you go.
"Hey I got it! lets have a Slasher flick where for one night, the whole nation/world goes mad! Every one goes into lock down to avoid being hacked to bits!"
"Wonderful idea, how should we have it happen? A freak sickness? A mind warping substance? Some demonic black magic to twists souls?"
"No no, how about the Government just says that there will be no laws for one night, so everyone can go murder people!!!"

Praying is another way of doing nothing helpful

"Outlaw star has spaceships that punch eachother" Joviwan
Read "Tales From The Crossroads"!
Read "One Wrong Turn"!

The first one made almost 100 million, considering the costs, that's unfortunately a massive ROI.Crazedwraith wrote:Wow. They made a sequel. Even on a budget of 3 million, the first one looks like it bombed.
Re: Purge: Anarchy Trailer
Didn't the first one essentially turn into a home invasion movie, just with a slightly more interesting premise for why things kick off?
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.

Correct. The sequel further explores the implications.Tsyroc wrote:Didn't the first one essentially turn into a home invasion movie, just with a slightly more interesting premise for why things kick off?
Here is another implication. because people are immune to criminal prosecution for what they did during the Purge, a state or Congress could legally require them to disclose what they did (since they would not be incriminated by their statements, they can not take the Fifth).

Shit. I am an idiot who can't read somehow I saw '$89,328,627' and mentally knocked off two decimal places or something.Block wrote:The first one made almost 100 million, considering the costs, that's unfortunately a massive ROI.Crazedwraith wrote:Wow. But that's a lot of profit, but only because it had a tiny budget. Which is actually sensible business for a change.
