Linux and anti-climaxes

Having spent the past month and a bit getting prepped for a linux install (finding all my driver discs, backing up everything [which in itself was a task as I had to borrow a CD writer and get that working], grabbing new drivers just in case etc etc etc) I installed Mandrake 9.0 earlier today and with the exception of the HDD partitioning (which took a bit of figuring out) it all went smoothly. No need for OS reinstalls, no lost data, no problems at all.

Now I just need to finish configuring all my devices under linux and then grab drivers (as the 3d GFX performance is shoddy as all hell) and update everything.

I'll take this opportunity to thank Darth Wong again for burning and mailing me the requisite CDs and also to say that Mandrake and Linux in general is shiny as hell and very very nice.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a convert.

I think I've booted linux twice since I installed it a month ago... I can't find drivers for either the BT HomeHighway box or the USB Belkin WiFi adapter, so it's a bit limited in what it can do

Now comes the part where you start to miss some of the things windows had that Linux doesn't. An easier-to-use interface, for one thing. And second, gaming capability (if you're into gaming).

Someone once gave the advice: use linux only if you plan on doing something specific with it.

It's pretty true. If general desktop computing and gaming are your objectives, stick with Windows. It's easier at the moment. However, if you want to do some server work or whatever, then Linux is obviously the best.

As for me, I'm going to stick with windows until they get a better interface, game support, and driver support. Then I might convert completely over. Those 3 things are where Linux lacks at the current time period.

I've left windows on my drive simply because I like having it there for gaming.

By the looks of things I'll be using linux for most other things. Why? Because I am sick of the fucking instability of windows. Memory leaks left right and centre, BSODs every half hour, hell, gaming is all I really do use the windows environment for (aside from the easily transferred wordprocessing and internet surfing). And to be quite truthful, many of the games I play already have Linux client conversions out there.

I'm gussing that is exaggeration on your part, or you had one serious damaged copy of windows.

:edit: In which case it is a good thing you got a stable OS.

Not an exagerration, my windows rot was at such a level that even Norton SystemWorks crashed when you tried to fix it.

I reinstalled windows and had some other unrelated problems.

Then I started piecing together solutions. So I have an intermitentally stable windows and a nice linux. What more can you want?

Besides an uber-comp of doom (TM).

I'm currently running RedHat 8.0 and like it; though OpenOffice didn't fit my needs so I purchased CodeWeaver's Crossover so I could run MS Office 2K.

My CoreDistro system had so many incompatibilities I tried installing LFS over it, and gave up, and now compiling LFS, using nALFS(I'm not going to waste time waiting for stuff to compile to enter commands, and I tried scripting, and all my scripts were full of bugs). Well of course Coredistro is meant to be stripped down as much as possible so I was expecting too much.

I'm currently logged in under Mandrake 9.1 on my dad's system, seeing as my own computer is currently non-operatable (due to a hardware problem).

Although he's a relative computer newbie, my father hasn't really had much trouble with Mandrake since I set it up
