I never really engaged much with other threads frequently but I have been meaning to ask about that for some time, what exactly did happen to that? Last I checked the status of that nearly everyone was on the hype train for it. I made a comment once that it wasn't great and had Slade took issue with it, and last I heard was some guy in Eastern Europe skewered the possible publication because it was leaked?

Also welcome Bounty, much like you I'm getting back onto this community.
Long story short, probably a bit off because I wasn't around for that particular drama:

It was some kinda-sorta epic fantasy about Earth versus Heaven and Hell. People who had already liked TBO here liked it; there was definite a milwank phase here on the board... Some kid in Ukraine or whatever pulled most of Salvation War off the Internet and self-published it. For legal reasons, this threw a wrench into Slade's plans to publish it himself. He had something of a meltdown about it and ended up being invited to take an indefinite leave of absence from the board. He ended up founding HPCA, a noxious pit of alt-right sewage, and remains basically persona non grata here.

Most of the right-wing contingent has largely dropped off the board or keep their thoughts to themselves for the most part. Shep rarely posts unless something juicy about gun control or an occasion to drop pointless info-dumps about how fucked up Baltimore is comes up.

Nitpick: HPCA existed for a long time before that.

It's quite interesting in that the hey-day of SDN was essentially made up of different sub-communities with very different views at the end of the day. The common target of ridicule was trekkies and Intelligent Designers. As the two main opponents of SDN largely faded away, we end up with a community that no longer had a common purpose.

The rise of other social media websites has also made SDN more redundant as an online community.

Nah, there's still a purpose, only it's shifted more towards general nerdery/social community among the remaining members. It's less of a destination, more of a childhood home-- the place a lot of us grew up in, maybe most of us have shifted most of our focus elsewhere but it's still a comfortable place where we know a bunch of people.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

tl;dr I bailed SDN right around the time I got properly diagnosed with a crippling panic disorder, got medicated, got a new degree, moved to China for a bit, came back, fell up the corporate ladder to senior something or other.

So what's been happening?
Well let's see... in the past 7 years I finished my PhD, became a communist, worked at State Farm while looking for a job in my field, got one and moved to Florida, and now I'm a supermod here (dear god...) and protect the people of Jacksonville from the usual mosquito-vectored diseases and look forward to one day fighting a losing battle against Zika virus imported by marines and sailors from the naval base who don't know how to wrap before they tap.

I'm not sure what voice tone you're using. Whether you're basically saying "You're welcome for your job security" or "How dare you besmirch the Navy?!" Or (sarcastic) "How dare you besmirch the Navy!?" So...

They're 19 year old kids trapped on a fucking ship for variable lengths of time often in areas where Zika is endemic. At least the sailors in Kings Bay are submariners... but Jacksonville is the home port for the USS Iwo Jima. Fuck. I know Navy Corpsmen who would probably kill themselves if they had to deal with that ship's compliment. And don't even get me fucking started on the jurisdictional issues. I... I want so very much to rant about a god damn story involving Dengue. Oh My God. But I probably shouldn't, at least not Wide Out In Public.

If I were a gambling man I'd put it on job security, Lonestar attended the same weekly briefings I did which can be best described in a typically three month period as the following

Don't Drink and Drive
Payday loans are bad
Seriously don't drink and drive
Don't spend your bonus on a fancy car (We know you will)
Don't be drunk at morning muster
How to repair your credit
Driving and drinking? Also bad it's the same thing
OPSEC or stop posting the ships location to facebook
For the love of god we were serious about the Drinking and Driving thing
Common scams 19 year olds like you fall for
Someone died last weekend so the next four weekly briefings will all be about drinking and driving

Old buddy of mine (former student turned friend) was a Corpsman. He... described the Hell of dealing with marines and sailors. So many STIs. So little learning from their prior STIs. No matter how many times he told them about condoms, they didn't listen...

He's a urologist now. He must either hate himself, or really enjoy staring at diseased dick... or alternatively, lives for the days he gets to treat priapisms.

Part of the problem is that the brain's executive function typically doesn't come fully on line until the mid-20's. Most 19 year old people are just not going to have fully mature judgement. "It seemed like a good idea at the time" being a common phrase heard during subsequent medical treatment.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. Some of us (largely) like the way Wars is going you know

'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'

Yeah, but it had integrity in storytelling back then, even in those halcyon days of 2005. Now, not so much.

It doesn’t help that today is dominated by Diznee franchises pouring into the cinema, among other studios trying to cash in on unoriginal rehashes. TV is the polar opposite, though.

I'm willing to forgive a lot for a franchise reboot that gave me that silent cut in TLJ.
