Looks like big ass caviar to me. Perhaps they have something to do with the ammo feed.

Those are the metal links that hook together to hold the ammunition together as a belt, and they actually are nothing like ball bearings, rather they are pieces of stamped steel.

Take a look at the ammunition in the box. See that band of black across all the rounds? That’s what the links look like before firing.

The links can be collected and reused to make new ammo belts.

Ah the good ol days on a Tango Alpha team (Terrorist Attack). The only time we manned our station for anything other than practice was to scare the crap out of some Greenpeace dorkweeds. It didn't last long. As soon as we got passed the getty we kicked it into gear and left them eating wake until the Coasties picked them up.

I liked firing the M60.
But I loved firing the 50 cal. Man that weapon rocks. The sound and the feeling of power you have walking the rounds out to the target is incredible. Even better than the Mark19. Which is cool as shit also.

I don't miss the Army, but I do miss the guns. Airborne! :)

Forget those puny 12.7mm rounds..

I'd want a helmet sight linked to a Russian CADS-1 mounting with bigger ammo drums and the whole thing mounted on a hovercraft or surface effect ship. Dual 30mm gatlings. *drool..*

Now add some anti ship missiles and a big gun and, wait that’s already been done..

Anyway, the USN seems to have deiced that M2 Isn't enough to deal with small craft and a lot of ships are trading 1-4 machine guns for a similar number of 25mm bushmasters. A recent upgrade of the Phalanx 20mm mounts now allows for targeting small craft as well..

And evidently the RIM-116 RAM can be locked onto and fired at ships. Just imagine some little Boghammer trying to escape a Sidewinder..

Ah stop it. You are giving me a hard on!
On the serious side. I watched an A10 come in low and decimate a target. That was so fucking cool I cannot even describe it. That was such a way cool scene.

But I was never in a position to get behind the wheel of some of the really high-speed shit.

More then I needed to know..

Unfortunately I've never able to see an A-10 use its cannon in person, but my neighbor fly's A-10s for the Pennsylvania ANG and has lent me some very cool footage of his unit on exercises at Red Flag and on a bombing range in New Jersey. GAU-8>M48 tank.. 500 pound bomb>pile of dirt..

The ultimate light automatic gun system would likely be a 40mm revolver cannon with a 70-80 caliber barrel firing APFSDS rounds, water cooled to allow for a sustained 1200+ RPM rate of fire. A dual mounting is of course a must.

35mm revolver cannons have been done, and 45 and 50mm has been found to be too large though both calibers have been made into chain guns.

Now that I think about it, this weapon is going to go on my Kirvo II design in some form, if I can find room.

Make sure you play the music from Airwolf, when you target the gun.

Defiantly, it would be ideal for when I blast though swarms of MD500s and UH-1s. It gets better though; CADS-1 also has eight anti aircraft missiles on the mount...
