Who is into theater?

Post by Thirdfain »

Damn, I love being on stage. Since sophmore year, I have been in every show our school runs, and it has been a lot of fun. I just got finished with my last show in high school. We did "Once on this Island," a truly great musical. Anyone else here at SD.net into theater? Do any other thespians lurk these hallowed boards?

Personally, I hate musicals. Most plays I can stand, and I'm actually a half-decent actor, but I hate performing.

I was very actively involved in my high school's theatre program. I daresay that I was one of the better actors there, but I got sick of doing musicals because I hated singing and dancing. The director had to basically beg me to do Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat because everyone else doing it was inexperienced, so I was one of the brothers (Levi, if memory serves).

That turned out to be an awful experience that I hated doing, and I basically told him that I wasn't going on-stage again. I'd been doing most of the stage work at that point anyway while being an actor on-stage, so I just decided to do that, because I enjoyed it much more.

So, for our last two productions, I did stage full-time and enjoyed it much more, because I was in charge of the whole deal, and I didn't have to sing or dance or put up with the typical high school actor bullshit politics and rumor-mongering. I did get plenty of reamings from the director on certain things, though, but that's the price you pay for being responsible.

But, I finished high school and got three awards from the International Thespian Society chapter of my school:

Best Thespian (Basically, I was the member who did the most work)
Honor Thespian (I'd earned tons of credit for my work, so I got a fancy title)
Best Theatre Technician (Self-expanatory)

So, I was pretty satisfied that I'd been thoroughly recognized, and the best part was that there was no bullshit surrounding that decision. Everyone knew that I unquestionably deserved it more than anyone else because I busted my ass, and they didn't.

Blech. I am a horrible actor. I do, however, have some interest in direction and production.

Nice work, Durandel! I am a decent actor, but my school has a lot of GREAT actors, so I am working in the shadows. We do small productions, nothing more than 20 people, and most with 12 or fewer. This means that the 3-4 really good singers and actors steal all the applause >:-( . Never the less, I pulled Best Supporting Actor this year.

 Actors rock! Theater is a lot of fun, too. It does wonders with helping you with shyness, too... Nothing like being in a dumbass costume in front of a room full of people to shock you into a certain degree of self confidence.

The few times I did anything with the college theater classes, I loved it. There was a couple of occasions where they pulled me off of the stage hand position and actually put me up acting when one of the actors was not there for whatever reason, probably because I can learn things really quick. I'd love to get back into theater but I'm not having much luck.

The only time I'm on stage is when I perform with bands, orchestras and choirs (where I love to get the spotlight). For theatrical performances, I'm always in the orchestra, playing really hard shit (right now, I'm the main percussionist in a production of 'West Side Story'). So....yeah. :D

Put on a few performances, though no acting was involved.....displays of combat, got a hell of a round of applause at the end though.

I can't act, but I love watching.. I've seen a few plays, but for some reason I've never been able to see Les Miserable which I've always wanted to do.

I am very activly involved in my schools thespian society. I performed recently in The Laramie Project, and Alice in Wonderland. And will soon be inducted into the national thespian society, and willl join speach and debate next year, doing probably extemp, debate, improv speaking, or original oratory.

I love acting, as well as performing in any way. Hell, I'm in a play this Friday and Saturday (curses the rehearsals for three days in a row, ne day break, and then two days of play ). Personally, though, I am not sure which I would like more.. being an actor or a musician.. I would LOVE to be able to be in the Pit orchestra for a musical or an opera.. or I would like to be an actor in a regular play.. so many choices...

I was a actor of some repute back in high school. I had two English teachers in a row almost beg me to become a thespian and join my school's drama group. Mind you, I (and no offense) didn't think very much of thespians back when I was in high school. And besides, I already had all the extracirricular shit I needed (I was very active in my school's NJROTC corps.)

Err, I don't mean to take anything away from any of you, but teachers usually have to beg guys to do theater because there aren't enough who volunteer. Especially for the musicals....

Too true! To the uninitiated, standing on a stage dressed up as a cowboy singing at the top of your lungs about some girl named Annie who does not actually exist sounds like a bad idea- I have to wonder, how did the first thespians ever get started? I mean, did some prehistoric man decide to run out in front of the rest of the tribe and make an utter ass of himself just for the sake of telling a story or eliciting a few laughs?

Hell, only reason I joined theater was because I thought it would bea good place to meet girls.

I can act, and used to be really into it (LAMDA gold medal, lots of plays and musicals), but at university I became more into the technical side (I managed one of our theatres), and I realised what big bitches nearly all actors and directors were. I will never work with that self-centred egomaniacal bunch of posres ever again.
