True, it's possible to get over bad science if it's done well. In Armageddon, however, they just wouldn't stop rubbing your nose in it. It was not just bad science, it was AGGRESSIVELY bad science. The whole "oil drillers' real-world smarts vs scientists' useless book-smarts" angle was REALLY irritating, and the way Billy Bob Thornton's character dismissed his rival's objections not with logic and facts, but by attacking his poor grades on a course they both took in university just drove me nuts. And do they have to exaggerate it so, with the asteroid getting so close to the Earth before blowing up and then each piece gaining fantastic velocity from the blast, drilling only 800 feet into an asteroid supposedly the size of Texas for an optimum blast, etc? Even science neophytes could easily see through the problems in that movie.innerbrat wrote:I learned a while ago not to let bad science ruin a good action movie. I guess you have to when your area of expertise is so misunderstood and yet so bloody popular (opening sequence to the X-Men, anyone?)Beowulf wrote:Not ruined do to plot holes, but rather holes in their science, was Armageddon. I much prefered Deep Impact.

Armageddon also suffered from being so incredibly cheesy, corny, maudlin, etcetera. It was like a marshmallow dipped in maple syrup and dusted with confectioner's sugar. Cliched, predictable, and Steve Buscemi must have really needed the money to let his name be stuck on a stinkeroo like that.

I never intended to imply I didn't like Reptilicus. I really enjoyed that movie. Few things are more entertaining than a good ol'-fashioned B-Movie.neoolong wrote:Dude, Reptilicus fucking rocked.Simon H.Johansen wrote:Bah! If you want real plot holes, I recommend Reptilicus!!Vympel wrote:You want plotholes? Try any Star Trek film except for No. 4 that deals with time travel.
In that movie, a gigantic dragon is roaming Denmark, yet people are STILL GOING TO THE BEACH, even though they probably know that they may meet a grisly death at the jaws of a dragon!! That's simply absurd.
Then again, it's a giant monster movie. And we all know how coherent plots such movies have.
That was awesome. Okay, it was complete crap, but it still rocked.

I think Phong, Skimmer and I could broadly reconstruct the disconnected events that occured during the course of a movie called "Ninja in the Killing Fields" which was made during the Kung Fu craze by the Royal Thai Army to augment the military budget when they ran Thailand.

Or, for that matter, the placing of Peter Cushing in "The Blood Beast Terror." (Cushing later regretted all participation in that movie - and he was known as an actor who didn't mind being typecast)Darth Gojira wrote:Talk about misdirected talent!
