The 'ridiculous' fine amount which 'has no basis in reality' is merely applying the maximum fine possible to the number of possible violations. It has every basis in reality, as it clearly establishes the maximum limit the FTC can push this.
IOW it's an extreme upper limit. A quarter of that would kill M$ and poof! No more Monopoly, no more TCPA, no more SSSCA/CBDTPA/SuperDMCA laws...

Next target: RIAA!

So they have a legal basis for it, whoop-de-do. There's no way a corporation with a market value of no more than 250 billion (and that's a generous number) is ever going to be able to pay 2.2 trillion dollars. They shouldn't be throwing around these kinds of numbers (furthermore, I doubt the FTC is going to choose to devote its full energies to such a massive redistribution scheme).

And for GOD'S SAKE, Microsoft is not a monopoly (at least not of the classic sort).

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Why not? It's the maximum penalty of the law. We talk about consecutive life sentences for murderers, don't we? We always talk about the maxmimum penalty of the law before the Judge actually hands down the sentence.

Of course not. Neither are the RIAA and MPAA. However, they are guilty of monopolistic practices, and therefore are the new monopolies.
