Some crazy criminals out there...

A few tidbits from my work in the Courts (names, dates, places etc, all left out due to the Data Protect Act, so I stay safe).

1. A case where a person stole a dog from a local police station. They actually broke into the kennels, and stole a dog. A terrier of some kind. The defendant, when told the kind of dog, responded: 'Oh, is that what it was?'.

2. A pair of theives made off with ground signal lights from the local stretch of rail line. At least £20'000 worth. I don't know how they thought they'd get away with that one.

3. A person pleaded guilty by post to a driving case, and asked that the case be dealt with in their absence. There was a fine issued, and penalty points placed on the licence, enough points for the driving authorities to revoke the licence.

A few days later, the person phones up, incredulous that because she pleaded guilty, the case was dealt with in such a manner (even though this is the norm). First the excuse was that pleading guilty had been a way to avoid other charges, then they tried to appeal against the conviction. The court threw out the appeal, as they had already pleaded guilty, and not wanted to plead migigating circumstances.
