Computer help, por favor

Post by Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi »

I have a problem with the CD-ROM drive with my computer that I noticed today. Whenever I put a CD in the drive, it makes an annoying buzzing noise, and whenever I try to use the CD, I get told I need to put it in drive. When it doesn't say that, it ends up never loading. So, basically, my CD-ROM drive and any software that needs a CD is useless now. Other than that, the computer's fine. I'm thinking the problem is with the drive itself, perhaps with the laser used to read the information. Does anyone here know how I could fix this?

Do you have a Windows 98 boot floppy? If so, boot to the floppy and try to access the CD-Rom. If you can read disks , then you know its probably an issue with Windows and not a physical problem with the CD-rom.

It sounds like a dying CD-ROM more than anything else. They're cheap nowadays...

At least get a decent one. Toshiba tends to make reliable CD-ROMs, for example.

Are you talking about the CD's themselves? Because the CDs I'm using are fairly new, and I didn't have problems using older, more scratched-up CDs in the past. However, I might experiment to see if the problem is with the CD itself.

We are all refering to the CD-ROM itself and not the disc.
