Vendetta wrote:Lancaster. Absolutely beautiful plane, Obscene bomb payload (four times that of the B-17 or B-29), occasional raids saw them carrying a single, special purpose 22,000lb bomb.

Plus I have a friend who crewed one in the war (Tail gunner).
Wrong Wrong Wrong….

B-17G payload was 17,600 pounds, Lancaster II's was just 14,000 pounds, B-24J could haul 8,800 pounds but at that loading could flew much furhter then a B-17 or Lancaster, both of which rarely had a load of over 8000 pounds. B-29A payload was 20,000 pounds at most any range.

To carry the 22,000 pound Gland Slam, a Lancaster II had to be stripped of its armor, all but the tail guns and a couple other things. The B-29 could also be modified to carry the Gland Slam as well and could carry it to a much greater distance. It had to lose some guns to do that but got to keep most of its armor.

The B-36, which could have seen service in a 1946 invasion of Japan had there been a need, could carry 86,000 pounds of bombs, across the Atlantic and back. It could and did carry two Grand Slams without having to shed any weight, and could also haul a single 43,000 pounder.

I like the version of the B-25 with all the nose guns. I also like the p-38 for its looks. The PBY Catalina is also a cool aircraft.

I always liked the Nazi jet fighters the best.

But the P-38 is cool too.

That is a gorgeous aircraft. Otherwise I am partial to the Lanc. I actually got to work on and help mount the propellers of one of two still flying :D

Can't pick just one, or even one of each type... so here's a few.

Fw-190.
Typhoon
Yak-3
1 particular I-153 that was used as a testbed for a ramjet (and the I-153 is a BIPLANE!)
P-38
F4U
P-40
SBD
P-47
FW-187 (never entered production, only 3 ever produced)
He-162
B-24
PBY
B-25

Yea, I know, I should realy narrow down my list. :)
There is no problem to dificult for a signifigantly large enough quantity of C-4 to handle.

Uh, you could probably damage optics or kill unbuttoned crew members. Beyond that, I don't think the 20mm can even distract that beast.

Don't wanna be nitpicky, but it's FW 190. Just for the sake of correctness.

Thus the stick bomb, that could at the minimal blow off a track, and maybe knock out the engine.

Now, you're talking about a stick bomb fired from the 20mm? How much damage could a 20mm bomb do, anyway?

Ju 88 P-1, with a Pak 50. Used on the Eastern Front with little success, but can take out T-34s with no problem

Yes, I brought up the stick bomb quite some time ago. A stick bomb is generally much larger then the gun that fires it, we'd be looking at more like a 40mm shaped charge bomb. I'd expect you could kill a Panzer III at short range.

A 40mm shaped charge round as you describe would almost definitely be able to immobilize the IS-2 by tracking it, at the least. But I wonder, what's the point? You'd do better with a Panzerfaust 60. It's about as deadly and doesn't require that you lug that gun carriage around.

No point, just an off hand comment that kept growing, dates back to this post aft i put IS-2 instead of Il-2

You knew what I meant, and I'm sure I can find a way to kill a Stalin with a 20mm cannon, a shaped charge stick bomb should work…
