Wrong Wrong Wrong….Vendetta wrote:Lancaster. Absolutely beautiful plane, Obscene bomb payload (four times that of the B-17 or B-29), occasional raids saw them carrying a single, special purpose 22,000lb bomb.
Plus I have a friend who crewed one in the war (Tail gunner).
B-17G payload was 17,600 pounds, Lancaster II's was just 14,000 pounds, B-24J could haul 8,800 pounds but at that loading could flew much furhter then a B-17 or Lancaster, both of which rarely had a load of over 8000 pounds. B-29A payload was 20,000 pounds at most any range.
To carry the 22,000 pound Gland Slam, a Lancaster II had to be stripped of its armor, all but the tail guns and a couple other things. The B-29 could also be modified to carry the Gland Slam as well and could carry it to a much greater distance. It had to lose some guns to do that but got to keep most of its armor.
The B-36, which could have seen service in a 1946 invasion of Japan had there been a need, could carry 86,000 pounds of bombs, across the Atlantic and back. It could and did carry two Grand Slams without having to shed any weight, and could also haul a single 43,000 pounder.
