Tampa has Ybor City, and we were launching point for Teddy and the Rough Riders. Ft Hesterly, the current (and going to be closed, so I hear) National Guard Armory is pretty cool (been in there, great place). And there's this tower thingy that I never quite figured out, but it's there.

I'd have the Alte Schloß (Old Castle), the Neue Schloß (New Castle), the last remaining piece of our medieval town wall that survived WW2, the roman foundations of Bad Canstatt, some VEry Old Graves (TM) under some churches, and all that other European history stuff

To live in New Orleans is to breathe history. Old Gentilly Rd., which bounds my own neighbourhood, has been a trading and transport path since the time the Houma tribe inhabited the area in the days before the French settlement, running out to Bayou Sauvage. A few miles east of my house lies the Chalmette Battlefield, where the Battle of New Orleans was fought, and slightly closer in that direction is NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, which has serviced the space programme since 1958 (the Saturn I and Saturn V first stage boosters were built here for Project Apollo, as are the Shuttle external tanks presently). A less than ten minute drive takes me to the Fair Grounds, one of the oldest horseracing tracks in the United States. North of my house, on Lake Pontchartrain, is Lakefront Airport with its art-deco terminal building from 1925.

4. Mission San Jose is only a few miles away. Its been restored since the original mission was destroyed by an earthquake.

And of course, Mission San Jose isn't as good as Mission Santa Clara. Mission San Jose was the fourteenth of the 21 missions, added in 1797. Santa Clara was the eighth mission, founded in 1777. It is now part of the prestigious campus of Santa Clara University (which is very close to my home).

Nice campus, I studied there a few times when I was going to SJSU. Hehe, our libraries closed at 9pm, Santa Clara's were open till midnight.

The closet Historical place near my house is about 100 miles away. That is Muroc Dry Lake bed. AKA Edwards AFB where the sound barrier was broken and MUCH more historical flight nonsense happened there. Also about 15 miles beneath my house is OIL (BLACK GOLD I TELL YAH). Also bout 20 mile away is sharktooth hill where htere are mayn fossilzed teeth from prehistoric sharks. Too bad that the place is quarintined PERMANENTLY due to a local and very harmful spore/disease.

Not much within 15 miles of Cramlington, coal mining history, old pit heaps, nothing much older than a century or so, I think Cramlington Village dates from about 1908, but I cant remember exactly.

Newcastle, approximately 10 miles away, has an old ruined abbey, the Tyne bridge (suspiciously similar to the Sidney Harbour Bridge), the various bits of History that come with Newcastle - mainly consisting of a lot of listed buildings and a few small gate house type things. As well as a lot of cultural stuff which make it a damn sight more cultural than Liverpool. Grrr.

If you extend the range to about 50 miles, then you start getting into Alnwick Castle, Warkworth and Bamburgh castles, as well as the various bits within the towns. Nothing very historic, but plenty of history.

spore/disease?

It's a spore that causes the disease Valley Fever. I caught it once and it is a NASTY bug.
