New nuclear clause in my car insurance policy

Post by Drewcifer »

I was looking over a packet of info that came with my latest car insurance renewal. Typical "here's where we're going to give you less coverage for the same amount" type stuff, but I came across this interesting thing in the 'changes to your policy' section:
(their emphasis)
SECTION IV - PHYSICAL DAMAGE COVERAGES

The following is added to When The Physical Damages Coverages Do Not Apply:

THERE IS NO COVERAGE FOR LOSS TO ANY VEHICLE THAT RESULTS FROM:

1. NUCLEAR REACTION;

2. RADIATION OR RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION FROM ANY SOURCE; OR

3. THE ACCIDENTAL OR INTENTIONAL DETONATION OF, OR RELEASE OF RADIATION FROM, ANY NUCLEAR OR RADIOACTIVE DEVICE.
hmm. So I'm no longer covered from damages incurred by solar flares, supernovas, or so called 'dirty-bombs'. Interesting. I never was covered for 'acts of war', but I see that they're worried enough about nuclear damages now that I'm not covered for that anymore. Weird.

Of course, if there was a dirty bomb or reactor melt-down close enough to damage my car, I would probably have bigger problems than worrying about a ride...

I am stunned.. How could they leave out the non-radioactive weapons of mass destruction?!

You can clean those off, though you're going to lose your paint in the process. Though most radioactive contamination could also be cleaned off

All that radioactive bomardment probably wouldn't do good things to the car's electronics.

Actually, its the EMP you really have to worry about, although taht's likely only to fry the radio.

The EMP would fry all electronics in the car, including the control computers. It would generate such a powerful electromagnetic pulse that wires would spontaneously generate large amounts of electricity that would burn and melt the circuit board components.

If you think about it, it makes sense. No insurance company is going to be wanting to replace a metropolitan area's worth of cars, when there is already enough damage to repair. :P

This will be bad next time you take your car on a flythrough of a plasma firefight, though this only can occur if you have a '56 black buick from Starwars Rogue Squadron 2. !ZUVIEL! !BENZIN! :twisted:
