A Word of Caution

Post by beyond hope »

Not to sound too paranoid, but a word about the threads asking about personal details (In particular "what do you look like?")

I've been chatting for about 4 years now: in that time I've heard of real-world stalking, threats, harassment, and so forth... all from the one chat room I'm in. In the best example I can think of, one of the people there (a bible-thumper conservative) actually tracked one of the liberal women down to her job and called her supervisor to turn her in for chatting while at work. Now, I have to say as well that some of us get along really well as well: some people from there have met each other and are good friends. I also don't see a lot of the bullshit here that I've seen on chat (of course, I also haven't been here nearly as long.)

I just say this as a gentle reminder that everything you post here can be pulled up by anyone, anywhere who is capable of typing "www.stardestroyer.net" into a location bar. Be mindful....

Even donkey-fuckers.

It's not like I really care. If you do a search for "John Hansen, CA" on whitepages.com, you'll get hundreds of results. Yeah, so I've got a few pics of me online. So what? I don't know any people who have face-comparison software; at any rate, what are they going to compare the images to?

The main thing is that I've never put my full name, address or phone number online. And I mean never. Sure, someone might find it if they crack the Social Security database, but the odds of your average idiot doing that are extremely low. So, as far as I'm concerned, I could hardly care less about whiners who call people long-distance to make death threats.

Sure, my image may be floating around. But so what? Online, people know me only as "Commander RayCav" They don't know anything else about me. What will the fact that they know what I look like will do anything different?

Yikes. I'll try not to do any more of those kind of polls again. But I'm sure that unless you give your adress and phone number on this forum, you won't have anyone here stalking you. Besides, there are plaves on the internet where you can find the names and adresses of just about anyone.

If you know what you're doing you can find almost anyone. With IP traces, BSing IP providers, various searchable subscription databases, and other such tools there's no such thing as true anonimity on the 'net. If you own a domain such as SD.net I can look it up and find full names and contact info for instance, and if you've ever subscribed to a magazine there's a public database where I can find your name and mailing info, and so on and so forth. With basic investigative skills a determined person could track pretty much any one of us down, the pictures just provide a face to the person. Of course the stalker could spam the picture all over the 'net with a caption that says something like "have you seen my long lost friend? please send his/her info if you have".

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either. :P

Me, I'm really easy to find. Well, if you know what school I go to, but if not, then you get to wade through the thousands of hits about at least two very notable people who share my name.

I haven't ordered anything online (yet). My parents have, though, but that's fine because I'm not going to say where they've ordered or what their first names are :P
