I heard that the leader of the other party, the CDU ( the christian democrate something or other, sorry I can't remember!) declared victory first even thought all the votes had not been counted yet.

Serious answer: the right does win elections from time to time. Just look at the exploits of Austria's Freedom party or Lekud in Israel. Or any of the rightwing dictatorships brought to power by the CIA throughout Africa and South America.
