I'm confused

Post by KingGlamis »

Ok, not trying to stir the pot here, just confused. I read the rules before posting... maybe I missed something. I started a thread called "Newbie Here" which is: http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0

Several people here welcomed me. Thanks to those that did. Then... barely into page two the thread got locked.

I am asking sincerely... why did that happen? On all of the other boards I frequent a thread rarely gets locked unless it gets REALLY ugly. That was not the case here, IMHO.

Can someone in the Admin/Mod explain to me what happened?

Thanks.

Generally because those threads become breeding grounds for spam.

Poking was what it was. Of course, it wasn't as bad as it used to be, but shameless spamming was all it was.

It was becoming very spammy. It wasn't your fault, I wouldn't worry about it.

And in the future, take care of this kind of thing over PM.

It was largely spam. Spam gets locked. If there had been an actual discussion going on in addition to all the "Howdy noob" posts it probably wouldn't have been.

I considered saying "Don't take it personally when this thread is locked as spam" but didn't.

Glamis, don't take it as a door being shut in your face, but take it as a sign that you have passed the first step: the welcoming phase.

Now is the time for you to actually go out into the forums and post normally. That's how it is.

Damn! No offense, every board has its rules, but you people would FREAK OUT on the board I moderate at. We have so many post whores posting so much nonsense it is incredible. But we allow that to a certain extent because it is fun (for some). As long as the post whores are regular members that contribute regularly, we allow almost anything, short of personal attacks/fights.

Point taken Shinova, I'll move on and join the general populace in post land. Thanks for your help everyone.

We're just a little more strict than some message boards, KG. In the end, it works out for the better. Keeps everything clean and well-organised.

Think of SD.N is a bit more like a book store/coffee shop than a playground. :)

Well the enforcement of spamming and poking was more a culmination of things...of which would be very lengthy and make less sense.

Simply put...it got to the point that it pissed of the higher up and was decided that it would end.

So enjoy your stay and don't worry...we aren't draconian slavemasters.

Sorry Glamis. Wasn't your fault though - every newbie welcome thread gets a short amount of time to garner posts before it's locked. We are rather strict on spam here - it's a consequence of having a mod and admin pool consisting mostly of angry, bitter and irritable veteran debaters :)

Humor me people. I've been on the net 4 years now, posting constantly on many boards. But I have never heard the terms poke or poking. I can guess what those terms mean, but I have no idea why they are considered a bad thing on this site. Do tell.

Thanks,
KG

Poking is a tradition that started on another board...migrated here...went out of control.

Most of the mods and admins decided against it...nothing much more to tell.

A newbie would show up, either with a "Hi, I'm me!" thread or just start posting in a discussion, and everyone with a three digit post count would start yelling "Poke!" or "Poke the n00b" or somesuch nonsense. The mods got tired of it, Darth Wong banned it, and That Was That.

And HemlockGrey, I'm not here to promote my favorite site. If I was the link would be in my signature. And for the record, our set of rules works quite well. Only one person banned since 1999. We moderate in a much different manor than many sites... but it seems to be working.

Well as long as your own fellow moderators aren't spamming, that's okay.

If they were, you'd know something's up.

Anyway, it's just that we've received plenty of flak from some other people. So it's natural for the upper division people to want to get a better grasp of control over the board.

I hear ya Shinova. I'm not ragging on the way this site is run/moderated, just trying to get a feel for the site and its rules. Honestly... I am a regular on many sites, but this one is the first I have been a user of that has such strict rules. That's OK, I can deal with that, but I do want to learn as much as I can about the rules and general accepted posting styles as I can. Noobs gotta start somewhere.

A briefing of board history is in order :)

In short, this board started as an extension of the main site, a place to discuss miltary style conflicts between Star Wars and Star Trek (note that the STvsSW forum is #2; it was created right after the Testing forum). In the same vein as sdnet's older brother, ASVS, these discussions are taken quite seriously, and there is little room for spam. As forums were added to discuss science, logic, morality, religion, politics, and other fantasy/sf universes, the same underlying theme of serious discussion has held true.

Now, that's not to say we don't have fun here -- you can you talk about sex and rock and roll (sorry, no drugs) and science fiction all in one place -- we just take our discussions seriously, even if we're not discussing something serious (like lesbians and anal sex).

This board has a very strong community, and is full of great people, but it is still, at its heart, a discussion board. So enjoy your stay, back up your claims, and don't spam :)

Glamis, the key to fitting in here is just be yourself, shoot the shit, make a thoughtful post here and there and try to avoid pointless "LMAO!" or "Postcount +1" posts (which are frowned upon). We do try to concern ourselves with limiting bandwidth usage.
