Of course, we wouldn't want adolescents to know what's happening to them. Heaven forbid they should actually know what's going on during puberty cause that involves... naughty parts. When you're a fundamentalist moron the most dangerous weapon is a little knowledge.

In the first book, there's a beach scene. Somewhere in that picture, a woman can be seen with her top undone (or topless or something like that).

Funny, they can find the topless woman in that scene but not Waldo's God damn shoe.

You sound suprised, they've got evil fundie-radar. They can spot a harmless "sin" at ten klicks but miss bigotry, intolerance and hate mongering at two inches.

And now I've read that they're banning Harry Potter books from school libraries because they have referances to magic and stuff like that, and are considered "evil" by religious groups
.

They fell victim to their own 500 year old propaganda. That should tell you something if they make up shit to convince others they are right and then start to believe the shit they make up.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

IIRC, several school systems have banned the Bible.

My husband worked for Waldenbooks and they always laughed when the "banned book list" came out. It's funny some of the titles on there. You have to wonder what morons came up with reasons to ban some things.

Speaking as a Christian, I can only say one thing:

Whatever idiots think that banning books is a good idea need to be shot, drawn and quartered, or otherwise taken out of the gene pool before they reproduce and indoctrinate their children.

While there are a few books on that list that I would not be comfortable reading, and definitely not comfortable letting children read, book banning is never an option to use. The correct and proper option is to simply avoid reading it, and convince others to voluntarily choose not to read/check out/purchase them.

It's the same principle with TV shows and movies. Don't like seeing a naked guy's ass on NYPD Blue? Don't watch it. Don't like watching shows that are meant to be near-T&A shows with vague plots and pretty-faced actors and actresses like Mutant X, Cleopatra 2525, and others? Don't watch them. Tired of summer "blockbusters" long on explosions but short on plot? Don't buy tickets.

You can't legislate morality, just as you can't force people to believe in a church that they're forced to attend. Ask Francisco Franco: he forced people to either attend the Catholic Church or stay at home. Nearly 30 years after he was forced to open Spain up to other religions, very few people are staunch Catholic, despite the official numbers still putting them at over 90% of the population... and most of the "staunch" are only that way because it's a family tradition, not because they're that strong in their religious beliefs.

In summary, banning books doesn't work, and just makes the banners look stupid.

I heard about one priest who bought all the Harry Potter books from one store just to burn them. Some Christian groups routinely get together to burn books. Damn Nazis.

There's a quote from the Cold War that fits in remarkably here. I wist I could remember who said it:

"If we have to suppress everything we don't want to hear, this country is on a pretty shaky basis."

I can almost see why "Go ask Alice" would be banned. Almost. As for the other books, I'd almost frogotten how stupid some members of humanity are. Thank you for reminding me.

I advocate we pour a little chlorine in this gene pool. Anyone want to help?
