College financial aid question

The financial aid office's lines are all busy so I couldn't get it at all. So I have to turn to here.


How exactly do scholarships pay for your tuition? Do they send you a check or does the scholarship foundation automatically pay the college?

In Georgia we have the HOPE Grant, funded by state lottery revenue. The University sends you a financial aid certificate digitally, you use that ticket to pay for tuition online, and you're done.

When I went to college scholarships were automatically deducted from the tuition fees if you chose to accept them on your financial aid form.

Depends. For my Florida Prepaid, the check just gets sent to that organization, and they pay my college tuition. For my Bright Futures' program, I just get a check. Speaking of which, I have to stop by Millican Hall and get it...

Here, if you recieve an outside scholarship, the scholarship group will either send a check made out to the school to you, or to the school itself with a memo as to what it is for. Scholarships from the school itself, however, are usually deducted from the bill you recieve.

It depends on the group sponsoring the scholarship, and how the college and sponsor have it set up.

Back when I attended Ohio State, the money went to OSU, but I was given any extra money, with part of it available at the beginning of the term and the rest available 7 weeks in.

I've received three scholarships. One was a small one from my highschool ($500), basically a thank-you for being an honour student. It was paid from a trust fund, they basically handed me a check.

I received two other yearly scholarships, they were from private manufacturing companies, but were handled by some Canadian scholarship organization. These checks were sent to the university and applied directly to my account. I think this is the standard method.

I received several Canadian student loans, and one bursary (didn't make much money first university year).

The student loans came as a form which I took to my bank, which required the bank to give me a loan. The student loans were pretty good. I paid no interest while at university (paid by Canadian gov't), and they were really low interest afterwards (either gov't subsidized, or the gov't specifies the interest).

The bursary was a $2000 check that basically said "To: Me From: Quebec Gov't".... sweet. Quebec subsidized tuition is really cheap ($2500 for a year of University) so the major expense was my appartment; the $2000 was a welcomed gift

Nathan F nicely summed up what I was going to say. And just so you can believe it; I work in the Student Financial Aid office here at Texas A&M, specifically in the Veterans Services office.
