Workplace Lockdown

Workplace Lockdown
I have a good friend in our IT dept and we chat alot. Yesterday she mentioned that the firm was going to "lock down" all the PCs to restrict web access in the Spring. I nodded sagely but a panic pricked my heart. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of workplace "lock down"? Will I still be able to access SD.Net at work? I'm more than a little concerned at being denied access to one of my oasis from stress and bullshit here at work.
Wherever you go, there you are.

It'll be difficult to justify because they are locking down any sites not directly related to work.
And Montcalm is probably right...this is nothing more then them going nuts because some moron visited porn while at work(usually why they lock down priviliges of this sort)

The decision to put a site on the shit list will probably be made after reviewing the following first:Stravo wrote:Will I still be able to access SD.Net at work?.
1. Time spent
2. Upload and download
3. Hits

Actually, that's rarely the case. It's usually because of an unacceptable Internet bill.Ghost Rider wrote:It'll be difficult to justify because they are locking down any sites not directly related to work.

Well usually associated with a good deal of porn sites...but true.BoredShirtless wrote:Actually, that's rarely the case. It's usually because of an unacceptable Internet bill.Ghost Rider wrote:It'll be difficult to justify because they are locking down any sites not directly related to work.

Depends on what they mean by lockdown.
I've worked at places where they were worried mainly about making sure you got your work done (i.e. flat Internet rate = doesn't matter for the Internet bill if you're surfing or not). And I've worked at a place where, if the site wasn't on the short list of approved sites, you couldn't get to it at all.

It all depends on what they mean by lockdown. Some places ( ie: Financial ) dont allow any internet except for a few approved sights. Other places simply close down ports related to items like Kazaa. Unless browsing the web is a daily need of your job it is concievable you could end up without any access.
My last company let anyone go anywhere. However, the other IT guy and I would sniff everynow and then so we knew who was downloading stuff of the web and who to watch for virus'.

That was sort of what it was like at my school, only it was 10% valid internet use, 30 porn, and 60% flash gaming. You'd think the 10% would be punished but noooooooooooo.Montcalm wrote:In cases like this i think the whole group will be punished cause one asshole visited porn site during work time.

SD.net was blocked for awhile where I worked. I was able to get to the board by searching for SD.net on google. For some reason the block was for the main site but not for the message board.
As it is my work blocks most game sites, porn sites and for some reason some sites that might have to do with sex. You might think that is sensible except this is a hospital and you would think that some discussions about sex and sex related things would be approrpriate to a hospital.
Earlier, I was able to totally bipass all of their blocks by installing AOL on a computer and running it through the hospitals internet service. The old tunnel through a tunnel bit. Now they have things set up so even that is blocked and installing stuff on the computers is much more difficult without approval.

By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.
