A "Real" Name is something that, traditionally has a meaning associated with it. and it can be unusual. Look at some of the names pouring out of the middle east (That we americans were only recently exposed to) Itzak Al-Habim Al-shrinda Makari, and the like. Do I think THEY'RE stupid? No. They have a meaning. typically they identify a person's lineage, as I understand it. But names like LaRinda, Chanequa, RaDermia, Taquishita, and their ilk mean nothing, SOUND made up, and sound unintelligent. Whether YOU like it or not, the world is a harsh place, and people DO judge other people on superficial bullshit like their names. It happens, it has happened and will continue to happen, and parents should consider this before naming their kids after a sound they make when they sneeze.

As if you'd judge a person bad by a name like Chanequa. It's got a foreign sound to it anyway.

I didn't say I personally would judge based on a name,(and I wouldn't) but alot of people do. and I was giving examples, not talking about specifics (Ref. Chanequa-it does not sound ethnic to me). And yes, alot of those names are a random assortment of meaningless syllables and they DO sound stupid (Not to say the PERSON is stupid). that's my opinion, and I won't change it. until you can show me something which legitimizes these names as derivatives of meaningful words from other languages, they will remain stupid and sound like the mutterings of a language which never existed.
Keep in mind many people are petty, mean-spirited, and evil. Alas, with my jaded view of humans in general, My opinion of people as such will remain unchanged.

I judge names by how they sound, and if they have a meaning, there meaning. I don't really care about tradition. LaQuishia is crap.

If some one wants to give their kid a gibberish name they made up fine. People are doing it all the time. But nonsensical names sounds silly and it's hard to respect some one with gibberish name because it just sounds ignorant.

I think my mom's evil influence rubbed off on me. I decided if I ever have a daughter I would name her "Lara Tatyana" after the two most important women in Dr. Zhivago....

My mom swooned..... (She loves that book/movie)

Actually, I'd thought of naming any daughter I (probably won't) have Tatyana, since one side of my family is Russian (we think...Ellis Island records are weird), and I like the sound of the name. I know I won't name any sons after me, since it's very confusing to have two people with the same name in the same house (as I've said, my father and I have the same name).

Common names have their drawbacks. My first name is Christopher, which everyone shortens to "Chris." I've even tried answering the phone at work with "Christopher speaking" and using "Christopher" on my nametag, to no avail. It always becomes "Chris." In one class I was in, I was one of 5 Chrises (one of them a Christine who went by Chris.) To make matters worse, one of them was also a "Chris Klein," although his last name was spelled differently.

Yeah, I had a class where there were 4 Stephens/Stevens, and I work indirectly for another Stephen (which is how mine is spelled). Of course, the other bad thing with the "ph" spelling is that idiot teacher who can't read will confuse Stephen with Stephanie. Rather amusing for a teacher to call out "Stephanie" and get a bass voice in response

Where I work in the Dept of Vital Registration, we have a term for the Taquishas and other odd names we run across:

Designer Names.

These names start appearing (in WV) in 1970's. In the 90's, it seems like every other certificate has a Designer Name. 'La-" this, 'Ta-" that. "De-jah Vue Lynch".

Now, as to the accusations of racism? As a worker in Vital Registration, I see the race of parent and child. Four out of Five children with designer names have at least one black parent, usually the mother. There is a definate link between race and Designer name.

You'll run into a fair number "Shaunequas" and "Tawandas" around Baltimore, too, and the population there is majority-black. That's not to say that the goofy name phenominon is confined to them: Moon Unit, anyone?

This is true. Most of the non-black children with odd names usually fall into the 'Moon Unit" or 'FlowerChild'-style naming.

Yet the most popular names (some for either sex):
Taylor
Hunter
Bailey
Alexander/Alexandra (and variants)
Nichole/Nicholas
Kaylee (and every spelling variant you can imagine of "kay" and "lee")
MacKenzie (and variants)
Brian/Brianna (and variants)

Of course, the traditional Biblical Names (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Joshua, Zachary, etc)
Although many 'old-fashioned' names are making an appearance in the 2000's, such as Emily, Norma, Edith, and Lucy/Lucille.

Once again, all names from samples of acutal birth certificates on file in the Office of Vital Registration, WV Dept. of Health and Human Resources.

I live in a city where blacks are the majority and most of those kids have pretty stupid names like laquisha and junk but the worse and stupidest is in my high school there was a kid with the name 'Abcd' his parents couldn't think of any name when he was born, I mean it isn't that hard to think of a name (or make one up) but the lazziness of those parents is just beyond words....

My wife is a kindergarten teacher in an inner city school, and the names of some of her kids...good god. Lexus (after the car), a whole bunch of the stupid La- and Kwa- namea (Lakwisha KwaNisha etc.) and i sear to god there is a kid named Remy Martin (after the coniac). But i have to say, Abcd takes the cake......
