Going Medieval!

Post by SirNitram »

That's what I did yesterday. I'm writing this now, and some of the aches are still with me. To clarify: I'm now a swordtoting member of the SCA. I spent my Sunday evening doling out medieval-era asskicking on Pells while I learned how to effectively swing a mostly-ducttape weapon and play-fight in a good fourty pounds of armor.

I'm still kinda worn out. But damn. Damn. Damn. Was that fun!

Hehe, coolness. I'm also in the SCA, I want to get into heavy fighting (what you are doing), but interestingly, the one critical part of the armor that I don't have is the cup, so I can't fight. I really should stop being so damn lazy.

SCA? For all of us non-cool people who aren't in the SCA, what is it?

Heh, so you finally decided to strap on the pickle bucket, retan, and board and become a fighter in the SCA, eh? I hope you enjoy being bruised through a steel (or plastic) plate because you didn't roll with a blow right. Oddly enough, from the fighters I know, you will be proud of those bruises for mysterious macho reasons. I hope to see you at events, when I go.

What kingdom/group/clan are you and Tevar in? I tend to hang with Silver Talon when I go to events.

Hehe, the bruises and "armor bites" are half of the fun. (finding some idiot light's rapier in your helm because he didn't put a tip on it isn't though)

Though the question was not directed to me, I will answer it from my stand point:

I am located in the Kingdom of An Tir, in the Barony of Dragon's Laire. I am loosely affiliated with House Persistant and the bards.

Perferred weapons: glaive, bastard sword

I'm not a member of the SCA, but I have gone to a couple of local events with a friend of mine who is.

We had a mock battle and he beat the living crap out of me. :D But I did get one good swipe in that knocked him on his ass.

I was in SCA in high school. and a bit out of high school, we just had mock battles, mostly. My preferred weapon was a pike.

Ah, I see. My parents, if they were still active, are part of Aethelmarc too, only they'd be in the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands. I'm not clear on all the names though, since until recently I've been calling Aethelmarc the East Kingdom because that was what it was called when I used to go to events way back when, though the Barony was still the same. I may well see you guys at events, if I become active in the society again, since we'd be going to all the same ones, as Silver Talon is mostly West Virginia folks too. I don't know if you know him, but I camp with a gentleman by the name of Marn.

MARN!!!!! The Original Dirty Old Man!! Nit's not met him yet.
When you see him ... well, nevermind, I'm only one of the girls that hang all over him at events. Remind me to tell you about Marn and Prince Alexander at BlackStone Raid ... umm... 4?
Oh, Gil, does this make you a DOMiT?

Anyway, we have friends in Silver Talon. Matthias Harlech, for one. I'm the one that got Matthias into the Society in the first place! (Nit? Matthias is Ben. Yes, that Ben, of Casa DysFunctialle.)

Wow, the old goat is well connected. I know him mostly outside of the Society (we live in the same area and I walk my dog in the same park that he goes to). See, while he's an ancient friend of my fathers via the SCA, I only met him early this year and have been to only one major event with him as a labor monkey, which is how I'm connected with Silver Talon (it was at war practice, though I was a bit under the weather that week).

But yeah, if I go to events, it will likely be with him, so I'd probably be hanging around his Super-Powered Ultimate Tricked Out MegaTent.
Oh, Gil, does this make you a DOMiT?
Well, I could never live up to Marn's standard of DOMness, but he does impart his wisdom of such matters upon my unworthy self from time to time.

I'm not in the SCA but I have been to one event out here. I'm in the outlands, so apparently the biggest event out here is Outlandish.. which is not til next year; I missed that one by two events.

Does this Philip of Burgundy take after Philip the Good, or Philip the Bold?

Er, perhaps. Historically speaking Philip of Burgundy was one of two rulers of the Duchy of Burgundy, an exceptionally powerful state medieval state which controlled parts of France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The two Philips were the last two rulers of the Duchy and were very good at what they did.

EDIT:
Oops, made a mistake here, and mixed up Charles and Philip the Bold :(

Someone calling himself Philip of Burgundy is shooting high, and the best way to deal with him is to recruit a hardy Schwyzer to slice his head open with a halberd.
