Fan-Made Sci-Fi - Can it be done?

A sci-fi series with no special effects at all would be tricky(Plus, we do have some really talented modellers, and they would add to it). However, a relatively low-end sci-fi series would be perfect. A submarine-like starship would keep the crew cramped with clunky boxes that could be spraypainted carboard, after all. But we ultimately have all we need for such a project here: Imaginative writers, modellers for exterior shots, even a wicked makeup artist(Hey Poe!), and the collection of voices and appearances should fill out any cast.
