Worldcom Outages and Bugbear

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

Worldcom had a lot of trouble today. Our connection to the internet was down most of the day.

Did anyone else get hit?

On another note, anyone having trouble with Bugbear ? We have not seen any emails with bugbear being intercepted by the email server. Nor have any been quarrantined by my Norton server.

We are still seeing 5-15 Klez a day being stopped. Im wondering if Bugbear is largely circulating among home pc users and not the corporate environment.

Bugbear is well and truly rampant on the UK academic networks. Luckily I was checking my mail live on the server when it was being sent out by one of our infected users, so we managed to kill the server and get everyone's AV updated before it could do any real damage (though it really was worth getting infected to walk into the open access rooms and see all the printers spewing out page after page of gibberish - with the supervisor re-filling the tray every couple of minutes and refusing to turn them off incase something important needed printing. D'oh!!).

final tally: 6 people infected, about 1hour's work to clear it all up.

After Nimda I make a concerted effort to make sure everyone's PCs have the right updates. We use Norton Corporate edition to watch everyone's virus definitions.

I also make an effort make sure all machines have updated their Internet Explorers with critical updates to make sure the html preview patch is installed.

Of course you can patch a machine that has been turned off for months and is sitting in a desk drawer.
