So, I've been practicing some country licks on my guitar lately, and I really have to say how fun it is. So here is my question: What the fuck ever happened to country music? We used to have artists like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Chet Atkins, Glen Campbel, etc., and now we have this neo pop music with steel guitars. Why does modern country suck so damn much? I mean, it's freggin rock botton of suckiness!
I have come up with a few reasons that I would like to put forth.
1. It lost its 'twang.' While we still have a couple artists like Dwight Yoakum, modern country is just pop music with fiddles and steel guitars. The only difference is that I can listen to some pop, while 99% of modern country is absolute crap.
2. All male vocalists sound the same. Of all the reasons why modern country is so horrid, this to me is the main one. Back in the day, we had vocalists like Jim Reeves (awesome voice), Patsy Cline, Elvis and Johnny Cash. Now we have Garth Brooks, Tim Mcgraw, Dixie Chicks, Brooks and Dunn, etc., and they all sound the SAME! It's like a distinct style of shitty psuedo-southern style singing crept into country somewhere along the way and brought it down another notch. Country music is almost laughable now because of it.
3. It's turned into simpleton garbage. There was a time when country music had guitarists like Chet Atkins and James Burton. That's when country was country and it was still rocking. Country music is no longer fresh, yet we are still hearing these simple country/blues lead scales... minus the twang of course.
Does anyone want to contribute to this list? How about the fact that the lyrics suck now? Or how cheesy the titles are? Anyone? How about how stupid the major artists names are?

Johnny Cash died dude. ( bad joke )
Well, I neither hate nor love country. So that means I like some of the tunes and not others.
Some things that come to mind for me are:
1) Increasing urbanization. Old country came from a generation of folks who lived in real rural areas. Sprawl has encroached on a lot of those areas and the way of life that spawned the old country music has gone away or changed.
2) Strong corporate control. Im only guessing here but I think the same corporate cookie cutter approach to music in the pop industry probably exits in the country industry.
3) Music is always changing. Not matter what, music changes and evolves over time. Unless you are in an episode of TNG.
