Kebab vs. Kabob

Post by Peregrin Toker »

[Monty Burns]
(looks at a cardboard box with the word "KEBAB" written on it)

Kebab.

(then looks at a similar box emblazoned with "KABOB")

Kabob.

(looks at the two boxes repeatedly, looking confused)

Kebab. Kabob. Kebab. Kabob.

[/Monty Burns]

In the Danish language, a particular type of meat used in Middle Eastern cooking IIRC is known as kebab.

However, when browsing English websites I often hear of something called kabob which I assume is the same as kebab.

Is it merely a matter of alternate spellings, or is there actually a difference between kabob and kebab?

IIRC it is has to do with trying to spell it like it sounds in a different alphabet and screwing up .... much like Usama vs. Osama

Nah, Kebab is somewhat like meatloaf, lot's of spices, very very good, I used to work with an afghani woman who brought kebab in for me once. Kabob is stuff on a stick. I like kabob better! :)

Dont know if it helps, but in the UK, a kebab in the drunken inedible thing sense is a sort of indian thing I think, various suspect meats with spices on a large spike, they shave some of it off, put it in a pitta bread and serve with salad and chilli or garlic sauce...

i think what he's trying to say with that sentence is that you only eat kebabs when too wasted to taste the rat meat.

Nonsense, I have been known to eat them sober, ok, there's nothing quite like having a kebab coated in chillis after a night out, but I am a major fan of kebabs regardless of my state of inebriation. That said, there was a guy down south who put seabirds in his, and there were quite a lot of rats at Lancaster University... and the kebabs there are the best I've had... hmmmm.

It's K-Bob, you reprobate fools!

My understanding is that Shish-Kebab is the dish served on skewers, and a Turkish name.

What exactly is catsup? I never heard that word before that particular Simpsons episode where Monty Burns couldn't decide on ketchup or catsup.

Same condiment, different spelling. I have no idea why.
