Black Two Seater T-38's / F-5 ??

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

Anyone know who is currently operating T-38's with an all black paint scheme.
They are two seaters with red lettering on the tail. I dont believe they are F-5's because the nose did not look right, but I could be wrong.

Four of them just flew over in formation and landed at Moffet FAS. Im wondering if they are part of the aggressor teams out at Fallon Nevada but I thought they were exclusively using the F-16 now.

They do remind me of those. But they were not in any inverted dives. :P
So it cant be them.

Speculating wildly: 509th BW from Whiteman AFB? IIRC they have some black T-38s for pilot concurrency.
Also IIRC: when the SR-71 was reactivated in the 90's, a few T-38s were allocated to support the program, painted black with red markings and BB tailcodes.

They were almost undoubtedly T-38's... though the differences betweenthe two planes are barely more than the designation. T-38's are just F-5's converted into the training role.

The reason I say they were T-38's though is pretty simple. The USAF doesn't really operate any F-5's. Even our aggressor squadrons using these planes are primarily equipped with the T-38.

Agressor squadrons now are mainly F-16's, but they still use T-38's, A-4's, and a few other planes as well. After all, it's not like the enemy is only going to be sending one model of aircraft after us.

The Marines are using F-5's. But they are not painted black.
I will drive over at lunch and see if I can spy a tail number, although I might think twice about using binocluars at the edge of a runway these days. :?

Dont want to get questioned by the feds!

Telling the difference between T-38's and F-5's is made even harder because they are painted black. Its hard to make out any features.

About 10 minutes after they flew over and big Anotov landed there. Funny how things change. A Russian aircraft landing in California to do business.

Easily excited are we? A flight of Maverick armed A-10's flew over my soccer field at 300 feet early this year, and I remained clam.

Na, go out there with a stubby length of fat green pipe and crouch down, while a friend with bolt cutters starts poking around the fence. That’s the way to get the Feds, and base security, on you.

But you see. Any minute my company could fold and unless I find a job quickly I might lose my house. So, I need something to be excited about.

As to cutting through the fence with bolt cutters, I'll do it if you do.

Well, the fence line is still federal property so I will pass. 8)

I went over at lunch to see if I could take a look. I could not see the jets.
There is a lot of places to park, I did see a big Anotov parked on the runway to buy goodies from Lockheed-Martin.

NASA has a test plane parked out there too.

I know of the base near Fremont, but I dont know its name. If you give me that I may be able to dig up what they might be doing. i used to know, but only because its live fire training flights from it which gave us the Terminator 2 future war set.

Nother question, what An model, I saw an An-128 at Phildephia International airport about a year ago? I'd assume this is also a 128, there the most in demande but some 22's are also flying charter.

To bad they don't yet have the An-225 in service..

The airfield is the former Moffet NAS in Sunnyvale, CA. The only fairly active unit left there is the 129th Rescue Wing.

Here is their website: http://www.129rqw.ca.ang.af.mil/

The russian is an AN-124. ( 4 engines, lots of wheels, louder than a C-5 )

It is not uncommon to see that one or others like it. They come to Moffet about every other month. Have been for some time now.

The other nearby airfield to Fremont is the old Alameda NAS. Travis is the only big base left in the Greater Bay Area.

Excellent. This information and question shall be passed onto some highly aviation inclined friends of mine.

Just thought I would add then right smack next to Moffet is Lockheed-Martin Sunnyvale and Onizuka AFB.

Onizuka was ground zero during the cold war. 8)

I've seen an An-124 at the nearby airport - I was wondering what it was doing there.

Well I found out why there are Marines hanging out at Moffet. There is a group of Marines practicing urban warfare at Concord Naval Weapons center.

Lots of open land, abandon buildings, and areas for firing weapons. It was on the radio this evening.
