GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by greenmm »

I am so fucking pissed right now.

After spending over 7 fruitless months of sending out countless resumes, going to numerous job fairs, searching for any kind of online job posting, and winding up only with a bunch of snail and e-mail rejections ("We're filling this post internally", "That job offering has been pulled", "We went with another candidate", ad infinitum nauseum), I finally land a temp job through accountemps with a local office. The job was great, I was actually putting into practice some of the accounting skills that I've gone back to college to learn (should get my Certificate this coming June, and planning on taking the CPA exam after that), and I was actually feeling like I was working for the company as opposed to just being another temp.

So what happens? Yesterday, right as I'm getting ready to leave -- time being critical since I have class Monday and Wednesday nights -- the manager comes up to me and says that my assignment is over, that I won't be coming back to work for them, and to clean out anything in the desk that belongs to me. He said things "weren't working out as he'd liked".

It doesn't make any sense. First off, this manager is a straightforward, somewhat blunt type of guy. He has no problem telling you when you're doing something wrong. At the same time, he also has a standard procedure for their employees where you have verbal then written warnings of problems -- and he insists that all temps follow all regular employee procedures (including using the same time cards for the punch clock), so you'd think that would apply to any disciplinary problems. Secondly, accountemps has a standard 3-month timeframe when the company has to choose to either let you go or hire you on, as opposed to the 90-day policy that some other agencies use. Well, today would have been 90 days since I started there, and Saturday would be the 3-month mark, so it throws up a suspicious flag.

What's even worse, though, is that in last week's manager's meeting (he's the general manager, and he has 2 processing managers and 5 store managers under him, plus the other admin and I were required to attend), he flat out said he wanted to spend more time out at the stores and less time in the office, and was going to be turning more responsibilities over to the other admin and myself. Why say that if he was going to let me go -- and if there was some reason for letting me go, why not tell me about it in advance?

I felt like I was shafted when Qwest laid us off last November (right after Thanksgiving, the fuckers). This time was just as bad, though.

Ouch. That's harsh. The job market today sucks royally. Good luck in finding a new job. Hopefully the temp place will make a point to get you a new assignment right away.

Jeez, that's weird. Yeah, talk to the guy. If he's as straightforward as you say, he'll be honest if you convince him.

Man, that sucks. I've heard of companies pulling that cheesy "3 months less a day and you're out" shit before.

Don't bother asking for your job back; they're obviously ruthless, and you're better off in the long run working somewhere else. But if your manager has any shred of decency in him, he might at least be willing to give you a good letter of reference.

Something I hadn't thought about until today when my wife and I were discussing it again:

They brought me in because one of their employees left suddenly -- no 2 week notice, no prior talk, just flat out quit and left them in a bind.

Well, a few weeks ago, she called the other admin (who she'd kept in touch with) asking if they had openings.

And guess who happened to come in yesterday, at which point the manager said she'd be working on a special project? You guessed it: the same lady.

Our bet is they decided to go the route of "We can pay her less than we're paying the temp agency for him, and not have to give him additional training, but we need to bad mouth him so that we can get out of the contract"....
