It depends on what part of Ireland they're from. Any thing south of Omag is incomprehansible, even to other irish people.Vendetta wrote:Of all the people I speak to who actually use English as a first language, the Irish.
Perfectly ordinary words rendered completely incomprehensible.
And you try taking some bugger's address... Especially if it's only specific to what county they live in...

Well, I can distinguish the more blatant differences, like southern accent, black, indian and the like. It gets difficult to do with the rest...TrailerParkJawa wrote:Are you able to tell the difference between American accents?Dahak wrote:Generally, I have more problems understanding American accents than British ones.
One of my lectures is held by a Russian guy. While he is hard to understand in German, it is well nigh impossible to do so when he talks English...
ie) Someone from New York vs California?
Just curious, I met a girl in class once who was from Vietman. She was ethnically chinese so spoke both Vietnamese, Cantonese, and English fluently.
But she had a lot of trouble understanding people from the south, blacks, and new yorkers. It was an interesting learning experience because I know other places have accents just like we do, but to me all German sounds the same.

I had the same problem with Indian doctors at the walk-in medical clinic. It's not comforting at all, in fact it made me downright fidgety when I have trouble trying to understand what the hell the doc is trying to say. My life could get FUBAR'd from not knowing what the doc is trying to tell me, or him not knowing what I'm saying and then the both of us get all confused.Techno_Union wrote:The neurologist I go to is Arabian, I could not understand a word he was trying to say. He wanted me to touch my nose and remember something about a house and a pen (some tests I had to do, not sure why), but he would tell me something about the house and the pen and I would have to remember it, I could understand him so I was constantly going, "uh", "what", "I'm sorry say that again", hopefully my migraine medicine is what I am supposed to be taking.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

Most incomprenensible accent I've ever come across was a Japanese (I think) chick who came into the the coffee shop where I work one day. It took me about three goes to work out that she wanted a cappucino.
I've heard that a lot of Americans have difficulty in understanding Australians because we talk so fast. Has anyone ever encountered this problem?Johonebesus wrote:I once met this fellow from New Jersey. He didn't have a very strong accent in and of itself; it was a very generic Northerner Latin accent. After all, this is completely straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?

Thickest accent? Has to be Scrooge McDuck.
Oh, non-fictional. Then it has to be my old TA from Statistics. She was Indian, and her English was so thick I could barely understand it. But she was hot, so I didn't care.

Quite a lot, most Americans I meet for the first time miss things because of the speed I talk and when you hear me talking with my English mates compared to when I'm talking with the US ones, the change in conversation pace is amazing.Morrigan wrote:Most incomprenensible accent I've ever come across was a Japanese (I think) chick who came into the the coffee shop where I work one day. Generally however, the people over here have problem with the fact that I speak in a northern accent and they generally cant understand me between the speed and the semi scottish/yorkshire/geordie accent.

yes and no. I thought a new guy at work was from Illinois, but he was from Las Vegas. I can certainly tell the North vs South accents apart.TrailerParkJawa wrote:Are you able to tell the difference between American accents?

Contrary to popular belief, there are varying accents in Australia. I can tell people from South Australia apart from Sydneyites and North Queenslanders.
