No different then the crap they sell at anime cons, and the kids eat it up thinking they got something worthy of anything more then a big kitchen knife.

Well, maybe lower...kitchen knives are sharp.

Maybe it's sale value would be improved if the broken tip lacerated the guy's chest. :D

I don't think that the tip broke ... going frame by frame it looks like the thing actually just bent up on its self and struck him ... like it was made from tin

It broke alright, the blade actually snapped in half about halfway between the tip & handle, and the broken half bounced off the table and poked him in the arm.

Yes, and no. With modern high quality stainless steel such as S30V it's perfectly fine for blades up to about a foot & a half long. Any longer than that and you'll have to go with a non-stainless steel, as a general rule. The main problem is it's a complete bitch & a half to do a differencial heat-treat (hard edge, soft spine) on stainless steel. I only know of 2 such stainless swords, and the heat-treater swears he's never doing it again.

I can't think of any decent alloy offhand that would shatter like that. Must have been real shitty.

Cheap wallhanger swords are generally made from either 420J2 stainless, or 440 stainless. Slightly better quality cheap wallhangers are made from 440C stainless steel.

420J2 is soft as far as stainless steels go. It doesn't hold an edge as well as 440. However, stainless steels contain a high percentage of chromium. And those chromium atoms make stainless steel really brittle (unlike carbon steels, which have a fair bit more give to them.)

And, notice that the announcer was hitting the broadside of the blade against the corner of the table, somewhere around the middle of the blade. He's applying stress to a localized portion of the blade, and he's applying this force to the blade's thinnest cross section. And since stainless steel doesn't really flex, that energy isn't dissipated along the length of the blade. And since stainless steel is brittle, it's really not surprising that the sword would break under such treatment.

ROTFL!

Especially in light of the "lifetime warranty" promised in the side-bar.

You can actually SEE the katana warping as he's wacking the table with it the first few times, and he's not even swinging it hard! Pathetic.

A good katana would've cut through a large bit of that table what with it's razor sharp edge.

Most decent swords would've cut that table. Hell, if he'd hit the sword against the table edge-first, rather than on the broad side of the blade, it would've left a mark as well.

Wow. And it looked like he was about to say how strong they are.

Until today, I never realized how much those shows jack up the price. This appears to be an identical sword for $10.

Might be half decent, might not be. You can ocassionally pick up good bargains. My friend got a real Japanese Katana for just under a hundred via a similar method.

With the wrong heat treatment, you can make lots of alloys brittle. Conversely, you could make that blade out of a cheap alloy and make it reasonably pliable with the right heat treatment.

Yeah. A friend of mine told me (after I showed it to him), that he had purchased an identical model through a distributor for $10. Gotta love the salesmanship, though. That makes watching the thing worth it.
