Linux vs. Unix

Post by haas mark »

Okay, I have a JAVA programming class where I have a horrid calss AND program to write that my friend helped explain to me today (Yay for Caisa). I utterly despise the Linux system here...it really sucks...But that may be due to me having gotte used to the Unix to do my programs and whatnot.

In any case...which do YOU prefer...Unix or Linux?

Linux is free. UNIX is not. However, having worked on Solaris before, it's definitely a bigger, stronger, more robust OS. Hell, the Answerbook alone makes Solaris the coolest. But it isn't free.

Linux has nothing on Unix when it comes to that :D

It is. Torvalds ported it over some years back. Many of the commands in Linux are the same if not similar to Unix.

I would like both a lot more if I took the time to learn all the commands... though I must say Linux only because I can install it on my home computer (plan to too)...though I've had more experience wandering in the unix enviroment... just suck it up and learn both, it does the mind some good

No idea. I've only dabbled with Linux, though I've played with HP-UX and Solaris on various University shell accounts.

If only they would install ncurses and the GNU ls command so that I could get my pretty colored "ls" :(

The big UNIX OSes such as Sun Solaris or HP tend to be much more stable than x86 Linux clusters. But, most Linux systems have some sort of nice GUI associated with them (KDE, Gnome, etc.)

I'm going to guess it's probably a learning curve thing. Though on some networks, the Linux boxes tend to be quicker than the centralized UNIX servers, but your results may vary.
