I don't smoke and I never tried. When I was young I had lots of problems with allergies and bronchitis so smoking seemed like a bad idea.

You cant smoke in any public building here, while this is somewhat unfair to smokers, after a while you really notice the difference from other states.

Even if smokers are in their non-smoking section it drifts over to you anyway. It stinks mightily. However, I personally would not be opposed to letting the business owner decide the rules.

I smoke about a pack every three days, plus maybe another full pack over the weekend (depending on if I go out drinking). For the record, the only place I smoke indoors is in bars and restaurants with smoking sections. I like smoking, but I hate the smell of old, stale cigarette smoke, so I never do it in my house or car.

While i don't smoke it pisses me off to see the Nazi's in america who are trying to ban ppl from smoking themselves. I read that in parts of America you can't even stand on your portch and smoke. Thats fucked up. People over there can buy automatic weapons and shit but if you smoke your a fucker? I am reminded of a quote by Bill Hicks when he was talkign about non-smoker nazi's

Yep. And what's more, smoking is one of the things that the politically correct police can't come down hard on. There's no comfort words to protect smokers from themselves, like 'clean-air challenged' or 'chemically dependant victim'. Nope, it's dead-on acceptable to call a smoker in a public place a full-on motherfucker.

I used to smoke, got up to about a pack every 2-3 days (worse if I was drunk or playing pool, where I'd get up to and over 2-3 packs in just a few hours).

I technically quit, woke up one morning, looked at the smokes and just went "fuck it", smoked the last one in there and didn't buy another pack till I turned 18 and did the normal thing of getting carded, smoked those, though it took me all of a quarter at school to finish them off.

Now I just smoke one or 2 cloves when I'm drinking, specifically at SCA events, only because smoking and drinking go together well and I did develop a fondness for cloves (the only ones that didn't make me sick, still gave the "up" and didn't addict me). I did try cigars, but I got VERY sick the first time I had one, to the point that I have nerve damage in my throat (upper 2 constrictor muscle rings either don't "fire" or they go backwards and put food in my throat depending on how they decide to not work).

Generally I would have to say, if you havn't tried it, DON'T!

I know I'll piss some people off by saying this, but let's face facts: smoking is fucking stupid. It's not a matter of being "unwise", or "ill-advised" or whatever: the correct term is FUCKING STUPID. You're playing the lung lottery, and hoping you'll be the lucky bastard to beat the odds.

As for the "FUCKING STUPID" issue of smoking, does anybody here drink? Do you think that is intelligent? Guaranteed to kill brain cells and eat holes in your liver, albeit slowly. Has the immediate effect of impairing judgement and reflexes, greatly increasing the risk of injury or death. Drinking, especially to the point of drunkenness, is fucking stupid. Just like platform jumping, rock climbing without a safety line, and 'gator wrestling are fucking stupid. Smoking is just relatively dumb and not very forward thinking. Considering most people start in their teens, go figure...

Actually you can smoke in public buildings in certain circumstances. I know that if there is, like a bar, that doesn't have employees and the owners run it, they can have smoking if they wish.

Actually, moderate drinking has never been shown to present any health risks at all. Compare that to the 10x difference in lung cancer probability for smokers. As for heavy drinking, yes, of course that's fucking stupid. That's why I almost never drink. I've had half a beer in the last six months.

No, smoking is fucking stupid. Increasing your lung cancer risk by ten times and deliberately ingesting chemicals which, when isolated, are WHMIS controlled substances is fucking stupid. Those other activities are fucking stupid as well, but all of them combined do not cause anywhere near as much death as smoking, and there's no such thing as second-hand rock climbing.

You seem to be arguing that A is not fucking stupid if B can also be shown to be fucking stupid. This does not follow.

Also, smoking is stupid because it doesn't get you high. For as stupid as alcohol, marijuana, etc. are, at least you have a change in your perception of reality. If you're going to do drugs, at least get high off of them.
Smoking just tastes funny, and that's not what I'd call fun.

Anyway Cigarettes do have some influences, even if people say otherwise, it's the nictoine, the active ingridient, that does it, it increases the efficency of the synapses in the brain for a while, I figure thats where the relaxing feeling comes from, your brain just starts working better for a while.

To me, that's a pretty crappy effect. And even if it is so effective, the trade-off is definitely not worth it.
For what it's worth, you might as well just listen to some classical music or concentrate real hard.

Anybody who smokes tobacco for the high is pretty pathetic. The truth is, they've built up a dependency, and once you're addicted, sure, you work better when you've got a cigarette. But it only takes effect once you've built up a dependency.
If you don't go for the high, that's fine, it's just that I don't see why someone would do something that harmful if it didn't have a pretty extraordinary effect.

I don't know, I smoked a half pack when I turned 18, and I didn't feel anything other than a funny taste in my mouth.

I smoke, but I'm in the process of quitting gradually. I thought I was a really light smoker and that it wouldn't really be that bad, but when I started hacking up brown shit, I decided that I probably shouldn't be doing it anymore. Then again, I also smoke clove cigarettes, which burn for about twice as long as normal cigarettes, so my 4 smokes a day was more like 8. Now I've cut back to roughly 1 a day, if that. Hopefully, I'll be able to take it to the point where I only smoke when I drink (because let's face it, when you've been drinking, you just feel like a cigarette), and then just quit entirely.
