China is currently procuring a blue water fleet, including carriers, from Russia. They are doing this mostly so they can compete over the Spratly Islands.

The only reasons I could see are 1) fundies take over the US and start a crusade to convert the heathens, or 2) China invades our allies, or declares war on the US just for the sheer imperialistic hell of it. Neither are really probable.
India and Pakistan could nuke each other and China would try to pick up the pieces, but we won't let em. Don't know if that'll come true, but keeping China from annexing our next base could be a reason. I like the speculation abt China steamrolling New Zeal--uh, North Korea-- with our aid.

Fifty years is too long a time to guess how the world will change, IMHO.

As far as a major shooting war, most likely not. An economic Cold War similar to that with the Soviet Union is far more likely, IMHO. Even that is something I give no better than 50/50 odds, since so much of our cheap labor is from China.

Yet they have a piss poor human rights record, and they routinely jail pro-democracy supporters...

I see war or at least a cold war type situation as inevitable in the next 50
years. China is starting to get too big for it's pond, and inevitably, the US
will at one point, be called in by the other countries in the region as a
counterbalance to Chinese power.

China has stated that it wants to get an american standard of living
(or at least close to one) for it's people. Now, that needs LOTS of
oil. And there ain't enough oil in the world to go around right now.

Go take a look at the spratly island spats, etc.

So unless china suddenly finds a magically hidden deposit of oil
on her land that's bigger than the Persian Gulf, war is inevitable.

If China wants oil so bad then they should join with us in Operation Stomp Iraq, and grab some of those oilfields for themselves.

China snagged a carrier from the Russians, but it's a rusty hulk that they'd have to be insane to try and deploy. More likely they're studying it in hopes of building one of their own. They've also been looking over an old WW2 light carrier they picked up somewhere.

BTW, where does India figure into this? Anywhere besides their stanoff with Pakistan?

Someone show Deimos a fucking map. Siberia and the Spratlys are RIGHT
on CHINA'S DOORSTEP.

Iraq is very very far away from China.

That's correct, they are located in the South China Sea. They are claimed by the Philippines, Malaysia, China, and I think another country. They are currently not being drilled, because no company will invest money on such a disputed peice of real estate.

If China gets their blue water navy, they can capture and hold the islands, giving them the oil.

Yeah, and IIRC the Philippines have the best claim to them. Unfortunately, they're having to deal with their own Islamic fundamentalists right now, and the government's kinda shaky. A couple of my friends are from there and they're worried the nation might actually collapse.

Won't happen. The Phillipines is basically a US ally. We're already sending
special forces to waste the fundies in the outlying island chains of
the Phillipines.

No, based on what we know about China now, China simply does not have th economic strength to do it, or rather is most unlikly to have it.
The Chinese are too pragmatic to shoot themselves in the foot with a war that neither side can efectivly prosicute.
