I'll agree with the others here. Most of the movie was fantastic with Smith pulling off a stellar performance as a man going mad from loneliness.
Then these two people show up and they're okay for a minute where we're seeing just how much his social skills have withered.. but everything after the Shrek scene basically fails, gets better for a bit with the attack on his house, then fails again with the ending.
If this had been the original ending from the book I would have called it one of my favorite movies of the year, as it is though I'll just call it pretty good and Smith's performance is still worth seeing the movie for.
I also smell reshoots or changes because I remember a point from the trailers that basically had one of the things hissing in his ear that didn't occur anywhere in here.

The book ending goes as so.
Spoilers in small text.
The vampires raid neville's house, break in the door and capture him. It turns out, those vampires he'd been killing had belong to a society of vampires that arise out of the ashes. Ruth gives him a pill to kill himself with before they public execute him. He was the vampire boogeyman

Warning: SPOILERS FOLLOW.
In the book, the vampires that have retained their sapience gather together and form a society - Neville is the last "true" human left alive. At the end of the book, they capture and eventually hang Neville, because he has essentially become their bogeyman through his actions, rather like mythological vampires are to us - thus the title.
Edit: damn, beaten to the punch. And apparently I'd forgotten some details about the ending... Whoops.

What hints? I saw a couple people mentioning hints but I don't see anything really.Xess wrote:That would have been a better ending, you only got hints of that in the movie and I wanted more. Thanks for the info.
Didn't read the book, sounds look a nice ending but would have made his life kind of pointless and would have pissed me off. As it is I was pissed at the way he died, seemed kind of pointless. He gots a cure, wow, and with 90% of the human population completely wiped out and 550 million + vampires running around, what are they exactly going to do with the cure... capture the vampires and cure them? Plus tacking in the religious part kind of annoyed me.
The movie title seems kind of tacked on. I agree that it looks like there was a reshoot. I vividly recall that there was one of those zombie/vampires hissing in his ear and it seemed like he was captured. I was waiting for that to occur in the movie.

Size 0 is stupid either way because you can't even see if there's any text in the first place.Crossroads Inc. wrote:What, you've never heard of "Copy paste" its what I do with size 0Phantasee wrote:I'm just going to mention, putting spoilers in size 0 text is retarded, because if a thread gets locked, you can't hit quote to see what was written.
....
Anyway, I had been pretty stoked to see this for the past few months but due to word of mouth my enthusiasm has deflated a bit. Even with the different ending and shift to action in the second half, is it still worth seeing?

I would recommend that you catch the matinée if you think you wont like it. But I would still see it. It was the vampire coming out into the sun when Smith's character snatched the female vampire and them setting the trap using the mannequin mostly. Those scenes really showed that they were at least sorta intelligent and caring. The alpha male's vendetta seems to indicate it to me as well.ArmorPierce wrote:What hints? Phantasee, Spanky. Shut the fuck up. We did this rule because of retards who had no fucking sense of mind of what and what not to do in a movie/book/TV series thread.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Size 0 is stupid either way because you can't even see if there's any text in the first place.Crossroads Inc. wrote:What, you've never heard of "Copy paste" its what I do with size 0Phantasee wrote:I'm just going to mention, putting spoilers in size 0 text is retarded, because if a thread gets locked, you can't hit quote to see what was written.

See, my first thought was that Smith captured the alpha vampire's mate, but then again, can they even breed? Also, and perhaps I missed the line, but how did the woman and the kid get to Manhattan? Did they fail to blow up one of the bridges?Tanasinn wrote:One must also consider that Smith's character had been kidnapping infected for quite a while. Up until the last one, they all died. I rather thought the alpha vampire had a clue about that.
Also, why would they bother to cure the Infected? See, I know that Neville wants to do it because he thinks he's all alone, but given that a viable settlement of immunes exists, why would they risk increasingly-scarce humans to capture, cure, and no doubt rehabilitate the vampires? Further, who's to say that the former vampires can be rehabilitated? Perhaps the virus has rendered them permanently brain-damaged. It would be a waste of time and resources to have all these useless people around, which is important to consider if humanity is restricted to smaller, walled compounds.
Then again, if immunity is not heritable, the cure would be important to ensure the survival of the next generation, so I could see its validity there.

I can't believe how much they botched the ending, it was the high note of the book and they threw it all away for the now classic bullshit Hollywood "there's still hope!" ending. That and of course Neville suddenly becomes a reborn whatever-religion-he-followed just before he realizes he's going to die anyway. Has there even been any Hollywood movie after Terminator 3 that had the balls to not have a happy ending?

I got that impression too, that the alpha was there to rescue his mate as much as kill Smith.Alferd Packer wrote:See, my first thought was that Smith captured the alpha vampire's mate, but then again, can they even breed? I think Anna and Ethan arriving in Manhattan is what we call an "Oops". That's an inconsistency in the movie.
For Neville, he did it because curing them was the only thing that was keeping him sane at all. Remember that he repeats to Anna that he doesn't want to leave New York because it's "ground zero and he can still stop this thing". He didn't have anything left and was well beyond reason on that. Also, why would they bother to cure the Infected? As for the rest, well... we treat people with AIDS, don't we, even though there is no chance of saving their lives and eventually will be killed. They are sick, and helping them if possible is the right thing to do, even if shooting them on the spot would be more expedient. Maybe if they are rehabilitated then they can stop being "useless", as you put it, and go back to possibly being someone's loved one or family or just a human being again.
Well, yes, there is that. Then again, if immunity is not heritable, the cure would be important to ensure the survival of the next generation, so I could see its validity there.

If the woman could hear Will Smith in Maryland, why couldn't the vermont colony hear him and radio back?

From what the woman said, it seems the reason that they are not all dead/vampires is because it was too cold for the virus to survive up there. I'm assuming that she was talking about it being airborne. Also the kid seems to be immune though it's not explained whether it's her kid or brother or something, is it? I don't recall.

I wondered some of the same things. Even if immunity is a hertiable trait perhaps not all offspring would inherit the trait so a vaccine is still a good idea.
I liked the show. Ive never read the books but I think Ill check them out even if they are drastically different from the show.

Depending on the type of radio and it's setup (antenna, mast height etc) it's entirely possible that Vermont colony wasn't recieving his transmissions or that he was in a spot where return transmissions couldn't reach. I don't know anything about his setup so I couldn't tell you anymore without details.CaptainChewbacca wrote:If the woman could hear Will Smith in Maryland, why couldn't the vermont colony hear him and radio back?
