Bwahaha! Hail Andrew Jackson, the Hero of New Orleans!
No, no, no, the Brits took off DESERTERS, not yankees. Must remember that the British were just taking off their deserters, prisoners. Much like what the US is doing now, going into other places and taking "bad people".
Our history books must differ on this subject. Mine say the British took off anyone.

Incidentally, I once saw this really dramatic chart which shows Napolean's march to and from Russia as a line that starts out very thick and ends up a thin fiber. Very powerful.

Hell yes. The Russians burned Moscow rather than let Napolean take it. That's some hardcore shit there.

It wasn't the Russians per se.

It was the convicts in the jails that they let out who burnt Moscow.

A few things.

Americans claim they took off anyone to better their purpose of inflaming the population.

In actual fact, the Royal Navy took off deserters, and a few unfortunates who might've been, recent immigrants to the US.

The majority of the US merchant fleet at that time WAS RN deserters.

Hell, 80% of the USN during the War of 1812 was ex-RN, how do you think they were such good sailors?

The British were boarding American merchant traders and ships of war and forcing sailors they determined to be of acceptable quaility to serve aboard British warships for fighting in the Nepoleonic war. If they were just taking deserters, it wouldn't have been enough to spark the war.
Impressment wasn't the main issue.

Hell, the Leopard event was in 1807, 5 years before the 1812 war.

The main issue was American expansionism and commerce, contraband and blockade.

While this is true, it's not the point I was trying to make.

Please back this up. You are contradicting every history book I've ever read.

There is a difference between accepting deserters and taking able-bodied men off of ships.

I've seen that one, it has something like seven seperate statistics put together into a single line, rather elegant.

Every one of which was most likely American.

I'll admit, they did take off those who weren't deserters, but the main reason the RN used for taking personell was because of deserters.
I dont get the big thing the Americans make of impressment. The Royal Navy did it to EVERYONE, literally.
At the Battle of Trafalgar, there were 13 Spaniards and 9 Frenchmen fighting on RN ships.

The main reason they stopped the yankee ships was because of contraband.

What, this makes it OK? And perhaps the reason Americans got worked up was because just a short time ago, they were British colonies?
The main reason they stopped the yankee ships was because of contraband.
And because they needed able sailors to fight their wars when thye didn't have time to train them.

Again Ted, please back up what you are saying.

The Americans for the most part were busy trying to establish a central government. They managed to buy Louisiana from Napoleon. The british were still being belligerent towards the americans, by stationing troops in forts that were to have been abandoned according to the agreement that ended the revolution, and by denying French ships access to american ports, along with impressing American seamen into the british navy.

The Federalists, who favored a stronger central government with greater authority as invisioned by Alexander Hamilton and others, were mostly in favor of establishing good relations with England. The Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson were more interested in establishing stronger ties with France, and were more quick to embrace war with England.

Keep in mind the republican party at the time was not the republican party of today. The modern republican party did not really take shape until much later, with the emergence of Abraham Lincoln.

IIRC, the War of 1812 was a British/French war over... something. As much as I am into history, I'm not that well caught up, as of late.
Wow, never knew someone into history SO off the mark.

1812 was when Boney attacked Russia after Russia pulled out of the Continental System.

Napoleonic War lasted from 1802-1815.

Revolutionary War Went from 1793-1801.

War of the First Coalition was 1789-90, Second Coalition 1791-92, Third 92-93.

Several small wars happend as well, such as the 1806 war between the US and France.

Napoleon basically stole the Spanish possesions in NA and sold it to the yanks at incredibly low price.

The British stayed in the forts, because the Americans never paid compensation to the loyalists.

Part of the peace treaty said that the Americans were to pay compensation, which they never did, so the British never pulled out of the Ohio Territory.

OK, now, the majority of the sailsors the British took off the american ships were deserters, approx. 75-80%.

Britain had few people left that the RN could take, many had joined the militia, and the coastal area's had gotten smart.

Another reason, was that the British considered all those born in the 13 colonies before 1783 were British subjects, and as such, viable targets for impressment. The Royal Navy was only allowed by law to impress British subjects.

Yankee Doodle Dandy, maybe?

At that time, rarely were they called Americans by anyone except themselves.

And besides, yanks is easier to type than Americans.

I resent the phrase 'Yankee', seeing that it is used as a derogatory term in my region of the country ;)
