You've acknowledged that the 82nd Airborne Division is parachute-certified. Why not deploy them from the C-130? We'd make a handful of sorties with minimal fighter cover. I don't see how that would severely dehabilitate our strikes elsewhere.

I wouldn't want to parachute foot-mobile infantry in the middle of nowhere, where they can be steamrolled.

The Kurds or Iraqis couldn't; the Syrians, Turks, or Iranians (who have been building up a pretty decent expeditionary arm to their army) could - And if any of them get involved we're in a war where a single infantry division being overrun after a hard fight and air power tearing up the attackers isn't really that big of a deal (to be horribly blunt). Hopefully the obvious consequence of that - War with the USA - would deter it from happening in the first place, hence the deployment.

Wow, DoZ, does that mean they've moved up from eight year old

The biggest most sustained war in the history of the region, the
Eight Year War between Iraq-Iran hasn't exactly inspired
confidence in the 'vaunted' fighting abilities of the people
from that shithole.
