I have a model of a Klingon ship from TOS, about 2/3 of a foot long.

I also have a 1/144 Epyon and Tallgeese2, neither painted because I'm too lazy and too time-stripped.

AT-AT
Snowspeeder
ISD
TIE-Int
TIE X1 (Vader's TIE Fighter)
2 X-Wings (one's big, with a removable R2 unit the other one's smaller)
B-Wing
A-Wing
Millenium Falcon (big model)
Unfinished Shuttle Tyderium

In addition, I also have various Warhammer 40,000 models, Necromunda, Battlefleet Gothic, Battletech, and Heavy Gear minis.

I've got over 50 Gundam models, but I've been too lazy to learn to use my airbrush to paint them properly.

They range from those cheap GW 1/144ths to a Perfect Grade Wing Zero Custom; from an old High Grade RX-178 Mk2 to a Master Grade Zeong (no PG UC kits yet...).

While I have not done it for a long time, I enjoy 1/35 scale military models from Tamiya, either vehicles or troops.

it really depends on. we use a lot of card board. not the brown stuff you know from packages but whitish/yellowish cardboard which is from 0.5 - 3mm thick. you can get really good results with it. i don´t know what it´s called in english but in german it´s finn pappe. finn cardboard, perhaps?

then there´s kappa pappe (kappa cardboard?) which is a bit more expensive but looks better. imagine a sandwich. the two pieces of bread are really thin, shiny, white cardboard and the stuff in between is styrofoam.

aaand then there´s the really cool stuff if you´ve want to build something in steal such as bridges or skyscrapers for example. you can buy all types of miniature I-BEAMS. be sure to take enough money to the store though.

we use wood as well of course.

other stuff:
wood glue: wood glue works perfectly for everything.
cutter: spend some money on a good cutter because the cheap one´s suck man tit and you´ll have to buy a new one after 2 weeks.

for landscapes which is not flat but has hills in it i´ve used plastiline which is expensive play dough in gray.

for simple structures in urban planing i´ve use styrodur which is actually used for isolation in houses. you´ll need thermo saw or an extremely sharp cutter for that stuff. if you use a blunt cutter it will only rip pieces of styrodur out and cause ugly edges.

windows are plexi glass of course. you can also use plexi glas to create good water. use blue paper as river/lake and put a plexi glas board on it. the glass will cause reflections and make it look more realistic.

I collect Warhammer Fantasy and 40K, also various military models. Most models are plsatic, bu many of the Warhammer ones are pewter. I find that acrylic paints works best. Just remember to primer.

I used to assemble military models, then I moved into Warhammer, which I apparently have a talent for. Oh yeah, I also do resin kits of Anime chicks.

I've also got a ST Excelsior model that I've got a hankerin' to do as a 'capured' Klingon vessel in the Klingon BoP green color scheme. But that'll be long after I finally get Spanky to help me on my upcoming Gundam online comic.

I like to build Gunpla, mostly HGUC and MG models, but some older kits as well. Right now, I'm wanting to get some more Patlabor MG kits, those things are really nice...

I have an EVA Unit 02 LM-HG model, but I don't want to paint it without an airbrush...

I have completed a model of the Tallgeese II and the VF-1 Valkyrie in Fighter Mode.

For real-life models, I have an F-84G Thunderjet almost complete (the right wing needs to be painted and touch-ups need to be done). Next on my list is a P-40C Warhawk, which I only have the nose and stick/seat combination put together. I'm also working on an F-14D "Super" Tomcat, F-100D Super Sabre, F8F Bearcat, and P-38J Lightning. It's slow going, though, since I can only work on them a couple hours each day during the summer. I don't have room on campus to work on them, and I work all summer.

Currently starting a dogfight scene from Macross Plus[/b] between the YF19 and the YF 21 using Hasegawa kits...

If I were to start collecting SW or ST models, what would be a good first kit?

Good luck on finding any ST kits out there. Try ebay. Bandai is releasing an excellent E-nil kit soon, but it comes pre-painted, apparently.

I have not built a model in a long time, I enjoy building them, but Ive always had a few problems to overcome.

1. Never had a good workplace to the build them.
2. Never have anyplace to display them.
3. My manual dexterity leaves much to be desired.

Seriously though, what do you all do with them after while? Even now that I have my own place, there isnt any real good spots to display them.

I recently found a box of Space Marines from the late 80's. I just ended up putting them in the dumpster since, many were broken, and I do not play anymore. Not that I would recognize today's game anyway.

Oh, one more thing, I found that I cant stand to use enamels and glues anymore. I get a rash or the smell bugs me. The blue tube of testors seems to bother me the least.

I go through the same thing. With paint. I hate painting, but many models require it, so I find myself not building them.

I use the Polly S water based paints. Those do not bug me, but the old Testors Model Master paints are just too potent.

If I had a workspace with a hood (like in chem class) that would work. But then I hate working with thinner and such.

Actually it's not the smell, thought that can be annoying, it is the need for many brushes or having to clean each one to switch to another color. And I don't like the cleanup. Gah, I'm lazy.

If you aren't especially good at it, but enjoy it, DO IT! Fuck what anyone else thinks. Every modeler I've spoken to, and yours truly, believes that you should build for yourself! *Thinks of Pfalz D.IIIa in green/mauve/wood*

As for glues and paints- if it's not a part that requires fiddling with, use super-glue. Building WWI planes, I use old-fashioned model glue only for inter-plane struts and such, they need to be fooled around with to get them right.
Testors makes fantastic acrilyc paints these days, no stench, easily thinned with water, and you can mix your own colors if you want.

I agree. I can build models in my office room now, just dont have anywhere to display them. I figure its okay to keep them on the bookshelf till I wanna build a new one, then chuck it. *shrug*

This might sound cheesy but Ive been known to buy a low quality snap-tite just to have something to assemble and paint. Its cheap, does not require glue, and you still can hold it and go "Zooooooom, bap-bap-bap-bap-bap" "Bogey, 11 oclock high"
