I like Godzilla and some of the other giant monster movies. Some anime is okay from time to time but I really haven't seen much of it.
Luckilly, from what's been written here, I haven't seen more than a few short clips of Japanese porn.
I did read that (supposedly) legal porn is that with the performers crotches pixilated out while the non-pixelated porn is illegal and therefore more naughty.

Its just a place, just like other places. I neither adore it or dipise it. The people (as most people do) tend to by very nice. The are very hospitable, even if they don't like you, and will go to great pains so you know that you are being treated nicely. Their food is above par, and some is outstanding, though their saki and beer suck.
I am neither a Anime fan, but I have seen some anime that I really like (Ghost in the Machine comes to mind) but I can say that as an art form, it is a subject all of its own.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The thing i like about japan is the same thing i like about everywhere, the little eccentricities and variations between people. Since japan is on the other side of the world, they're very different to us, and it's cool to see. also words like ninja are cool.
As for the whole hentai thing...i feel it's to do with corrupting innocence, despite it being generously proportioned innocence, due to the social pressures of that country and it's society.
Similar thing recently in UK, which prompted the rise of punk music over here, and hippies.
I just think it's cool to see how different societies have grown up differently, same thing when you see a relative or friend after years of not seeing them.

I'm really indifferent to the culture. I think the language is beautiful and quite interesting. As for anime, I tend to like it because much of it is so different from the kind of things you would see over here, and there tend to be more good anime produced there than there are good tv series/movies here, IMO. Also, in my experience, anime stories tend to be more continuous than is common here. I vastly prefer contiuous stories over episodic ones.

Actually, there's been a rise of "Late Night" Anime which are not really kid stuff. Lain, Noir, and Azumanga Daioh are all examples.

I'm only interested in Canadian culture...but I tolerate other cultures fine. Personally I think hating another culture (calling them pathetic, low, primitive) is just plain racist/culturalist whatever. There's no way everyone in a single culture would abide by every customs. And besides a culture is a mosaic of subcultures and over generalization of cultures and people can cause people to become myopic.

I've seen dragonball z...but is it just me or does it get subsequently poorer and poorer with each episode. At the beginning of the series people actually move their limbs to fight? Then at the end they just flashes in and out.

The Dragonball Saga was originally gonig to end with Goku vs. Freiza in a titanic earth-shaking battle, which ends in Goku fulfilling his race's destiny and becoming the Legendary Super Saiya-jin and destroying Freiza, dying in the process.
However, because of pressure from the Editors, it got dragged out all the way to Buu. Hence, why Toriyama hates all things Dragonball right now.
Besides, Manga > Anime.

I like some anime, but my main fascination is the military history. I'm an amateur World War II historian, with everything from books with technical data on the vehicles to books on the Kempeitai and the 6th Rangers liberation of the Cabantuan camp where the last survivors of the Bata'an Death March were held (my spelling of Bata'an is the way it's pronounced, according to my friend from Luzon who speaks Tagalog...saying "bah-tan" gets her pissed off). I'm equally fascinated with the RAF, AVF (Flying Tigers), and the technology of the era. It's got a lot of odd quirks.
For example, while the Me262 Schwalbe flew first, the Gloster Meteor actually entered service first. Thus, the Meteor was the first operational jet fighter in the world, not the 262. Very few people seem to know this.

The Meteor was the first to enter service, and the Me-262 was the first to enter regular squadron service.

No. For one, my fascination is sorta recent (growing, but recent), and for another, there aren't any Vietnamese restaurants around here that I know of. The Philadelphia area doesn't seem to attract many Asian immigrants. It looks pretty good, though.phongn wrote:Speaking of Vietnamese culture, ever have pho?RedImperator wrote:I'm a lot more interested in Vietnamese culture than Japanese. The girls are hotter, too.

I LOVE Pho. I got interested in it a number of years back and I've been going out for Pho at least every other week. It's great for when you're feeling sick, really clear the sinuses and just tastes damn great.
But as for Japanese culture? Well, I have a lot of family history that intertwines with Japanese history. Hell, odds are I also have a lot of Japanese blood in me as well.
Also, some Japs are quite cute

How can an aircraft be deemed operational if it never went on any operations??? The first to fly and operational are not interchangeable terms.Cpt_Frank wrote:First operational jet fighter was the HE-280, but it didn't enter service. The Dark wrote:For example, while the Me262 Schwalbe flew first, the Gloster Meteor actually entered service first. The first to fly was the HE-178, BTW. But that was just what we would call today a technology demonstrator.
