Obviously when the end has come...still sad to see that Soccer moms will attack comics, games, and TV...but when asked how much do they know about their children they give that blank look that currently always has scared me.

Doubtful we'd get lynched. We had 4 board members plus wives discussing these things in a movie theater and we didn't even get a dirty look or anything. Much was said about sex, masturbation, retarded fundies, and bad movies among other things.

When was this and who was involved? That sounds like it would've been much fun.

And, just because I'm curious, what movie was it? :)

That was last December before and after watching the Two Towers. The members there were Mark S, Natalie?, Mike & Rebecca Wong, Ted, and myself. How we got into a conversation about a guy whacking off while standing on a pole I'll never know.

Sounds like fun. :D Too bad that convo never made it to the boards (at least from where I can see); I bet it'd be rather interesting, to say the least. :)

I say the Bible should be illegal for minors too. Contains just as much, if not more, violence than any video game on the market.
Do you know how unappropriate the bible truly is? Oh god, growing up Catholic, it's a wonder Sunday school didn't just warp my fucking mind, or even, as much as I hate to say it, give me a hate view on Jews. (don't ask the line of reasoning, but if you know your scriptures half way, or even the story of Easter, you'd prolly know)

Right now, my 10 year old nephew and an 8 year old friend of his are spending the night, and the young boy actually OWNS Vice City. VICE CITY!!! He doesn't seem warped, in fact he seems calmer than my nephew. I chalk that one up to his mother. It's ludicrous, and I figure I speak out more about Video games because I grew up with them, my Brother practically grew up with them, and of course my nephew is growing up on them. It's guidance from the parents. Who wants to live a sheltered fucking life?

I'm not sure I see everybody's point.

Computergames have had age restrictions on them in the UK for ages. It's the same as putting an age certificate on films.

Parents don't necessarily know what's in a game/film until they see their kids in front of it. The age certificates show them what to expect.

Possibly because it doesn't contain any graphic violence. In itself, it's just some books, funny dice, paper, a rubber eraser and a pencil - perhaps also some pewter/lead miniatures.

Those people who believe RPGs to be Satanist Propaganda TM usually also believe the government to be infiltrated by a Global Satanist Conspiracy TM, so they usually don't bother going to the courts with it.

If I'm reading it right, it has a ratings thing on the box in the UK. Well, ours do too, and have for some time.

I think the big deal is that retailers can get arrested for selling the "mature" games to kids under 18, and something about lawsuits as well.

BUt you can get arrested for selling an 18 film on DVD to someone underage. Why should a game be any different?

I'm reasonably sure that people would have a problem with that too. But, since this thread is about games, it wasn't brought up. :)

Fine.

Is a person supposed to sit down and play every single game on the market before they let their kids go out to spend their saved up pocket money? Or are they supposed to just wait until the kid's spent the money, then sit down and play just that one game before deciding whether to confiscate it or not?

I say enough parenting so that they can at least keep up with their intrests, and have some knowledge of their child's level of suspension of reality.

I mean creating a law that says RETAILERS are resonsible for their kids, because they are so scared their children will see GTA3 and go out and kill hookers and jack cars, is just another sign of being lazy.

I mean blaming salesmen on how they handle your children is no different then blaming TV for their development.

So I assume you also endorse the removal of all age restrictions on films, so that when the kid says 'I'm going to the pictures', and, say you don't want your kid watching, for example, Event Horizon, you have to go with him to make sure he watches Shrek instead?

Parents can't keep an eye on their kids all the time - that's what growing up is about - so if you think your kid is not ready for GTA3 (after, presumably, having played it yourself), howare you going to stop him from buying it when he goes shopping with his mates?

You know, it's just like people who work at movie theaters, arcades and anywhere at the mall. Parents think these people are their personal baby sitters. My husband was balled out by some parents of some kids who they had dropped off at the theater. The kids jumped into an R rated movie, which my husband had his ushers ask them to move twice before kicking them out. The kids walked across a busy HIGHWAY to the mall. The parents caught them and blamed my husband. Pretty much, my husband told them very nicely that WE ARE NOT BABYSITTERS!
