I'm talking modern day. You'd have to name a modern day air battle where the USAF or RAF or whoever has been seriously involved and had to get into a knife fight. It can still happen, but if you're BVR munitions aren't taking the enemy out at 30 klicks, something's wrong.

That was caused by unreliable missiles and idiotic ROE. Considering the need for visual identification, they might as well have left their AIM-7s home (which in any case did not cope well with the shock of carrier landings and the humid climate).

The latest AIM-120 and AIM-9 varients are much superior. A gun is stiff useful as a backup, but that's really what it's for now.
