Re: The Board Members You Miss Thread
It'd be understandable if Mike decided to shut the place down one day, it costs money and time to keep operational. I'd hope at least there'd be an archive made available in that case. IE I'm re-reading the 2014 Ukraine livethread right now and it's a fascinating time capsule and interesting to see so many prophetic calls proven right in hindsight. The Infidel wrote: ↑2022-02-27 09:43amI hope Mike will keep this server up even when people have stopped posting, as I use it to read up on stuff. Re: The Board Members You Miss Thread
Might be worth starting an effort to create said Archive. It actually wouldn't be that hard.

Re: The Board Members You Miss Thread
How to archive this website (into say, PDFS)
To begin with - you'd need a MOD onboard with this, for subsections of the board that are 'restricted'
Now, actually doing it.
This is how each Sub-Forum is set up.
(Science Fiction)
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewforum.php?f=4
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewforum.php?f=4&start=50
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewforum. ... &start=100
etc
Down to the final page;
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewforum. ... tart=12750
Note: It shows 50 threads per page.
Each page, for the threads on it, shows the start, and last 'post page', in Groups of 25, for each thread.
i.e "The Orville"
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=166753
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... &start=100
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... &start=200 (Page 9)
It would be very, very simple to get each Forum page, and then each thread # and their final 'start' point
With that list, you could easily generate a list of links to every thread and it's pages on the board, and to add the code to make it the printable view (no avatar icons)
When I download a discussion form, I load that information into Microsoft Access, and tell it to spit the information out into a table.
Then it's a simple matter to drop it into an old file downloader (i.e Flashget), complete with destination file names.
Or just toss some more VBA code into Access and have it do it.
i.e
Download
http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=166753
to
F_4_T_166753_P_001
(Forum 4, Thread 166753, Page 1)
From there, a little more vba coding, and you can splice the thread pages together into one file.
Do that for all 250,000+ threads, and you have your Archive.
Would take me a few days to a week at most. That's including download time.

Discord does have a "thread" feature where you can create a subgroup apart from the main chat if you want to discuss stuff in depth. The SDN Discord has threads for Wordle and movie and TV discussion, for example, as well as the main chat and another chat for the STGOD.
The threads vanish after >24hrs of no activity, but you can still post in them to bump them back up!

Re: The Board Members You Miss Thread
I miss TYB too.
For some reason I also miss Spanky The Dolphin. I don't post or read here enough to really know why. He was going to school in the town where I was born before he stopped posting.
I also kind of miss DPDarkPrimus because the first DP always meant "Double Penetration" because I watched too much porn.
I also miss Darth Wong for various reasons. One of which is that I bought a DVD of a porn he used to recommend on his Q&A part of the website. I'm not really into gangbang videos but the DVD had the cool feature of allowing you to watch with the music on or off.

I remember Servo, it wasn't until I happened to read about it years later that I realised he must have been an MST3K fan. It was the vs. debates on the ST.com forums that actually led me here to begin with, must have been at least a decade and a half ago. The ST.com message boards themselves were shut down years ago, I must have gotten some 30,000 posts. I'd largely left a while before they pulled the plug.Darth Lucifer wrote: ↑2022-02-24 03:21pm Darth Servo was a friend from the old StarTrek.com forums as well as a prolific vs. debater during the height of the debate.

I don't so much miss him as miss the endless activity he prompted.
But yeah, I hope he's okay and happier now, but he's probably losing his shit over Ukraine.
