The point is that a flamethrower is used for attacking targets like bunkers. It is used to suck oxygen from an area, suffocating those inside (or just burning them). An M16 is designed to kill people at very long ranges, suppress enemy positions, and be a standard-issue infantry weapon. The two play different roles. The flamethrower requires support in order to operate, while the M16 can operate by itself. However, the M16 is incapable of taking bunkers or a fortified building with the same reliability, speed, and safety that a flamethrower can. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Both have their place on the battlefield (though the flamethrower is rapidly becoming obsolete), and neither can wholly replace the other one.
