Grave of the Fireflies.

I've never seen such a beautiful film about something so horrible...

Amistad was up there...

But I'd have to say one of the most depressing movies I've seen was a little anime from Studio Ghibli (IIRC) called Voices from a Distant Star. Just the sheer weight of the fact that they couldn't be together and any communication they had took years upon years to reach the other...

I'm surprised nobody mentioned PLATOON. That movie made me want to kill myself. The rape scene, Elias' attempted escape... Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings just cuts into your soul. It's a great movie, to be sure, but man...

Thanks guys. Now I have to go kill some teenagers with bright futures to cheer myself up.

It may seem kinda weird, but I though Cruel Intentions was a bit depressing.. not too much so, just a bit.

The only movies that ever depressed me were Schindler's List and AI. (Though the second one mainly depressed me because of it's mediocrity)

I'm just curious. Do you guys deliberately set out to watch depressing movies or do you just come across them? Personally I watch movies to see action, violence, bloodshed, and hot chicks, or mindless immature "Beavis & Butthead" style comedy, so I very rarely will ever see a movie that's remotely close to depressing. My music collection on the other hand is downright depressing to listen to.

Well, I didn't actually know 'Das Boot' was going to be as depressing as it was, the ending was a bit of a surprise...

The second. I myself don't go out of my way for depressing movies, but it's good to have an emotional catharsis now and then.

I watch depressing movies because they're good.

For depressing, I'd have tos ay that Night on the Galactic Railroad is a very good downer. I have yet to watch Grave of the Fireflies, however, I have every intent on doing so.

Maybe this is just the G-fan in me talking, but when I was a kid, Godzilla 1985 always got me depressed when they dropped Big G into the volcano...

Brazil's probably the most depressing movie I've seen.

It's a tossup. Only one movie made me bawl my little eyes out, and that was the Transformers movie(I was 8! They killed Optimus!). For sheer on nihilism, 12 Monkeys. It was a good film overall, but the sheer crushing feeling of defeat at the end was saddening.

Of course, there's also Backdraft, which is banned from my house.

I don't like to watch depressing movies. I prefer Sci-Fi and spoofs when ever possible. But sometimes your flicking arround the channels and you come across a movie that although you wouldn't pay to watch is ok if it's on. I tend to avoid a lot of movies. 8 Legged Freaks gave me nightmares for a month. I suffer from very vivid dreams when i do dream and shit like horror movies are pure nightmare fodder for me.
